MEDEIROS, Charlla de Jesuz; PRETTI, Cristiane Badaró de Oliveira  e  NICOLE, Andressa Garcia. Demographic and clinical characteristics of tuberculosis cases notified by the Center for Hospital Epidemiology of the Municipality of Vitória, State of Espirito Santo, Brazil, 2009-2010. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2012, vol.21, n.1, pp.159-166. ISSN 1679-4974.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742012000100016.

OBJECTIVE: describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of tuberculosis (TB) cases notified by the Center for Hospital Epidemiology of a philanthropic institution in the Municipality of Vitória, State of Espírito Santo, Brazil. METHODS: descriptive study using data from the Information System for Notifiable Diseases (Sinan) and spreadsheets of the service, referring to cases reported between July 2009 and July 2010. RESULTS: 66 cases were reported; 48 were male, and 34 aged 20-39 years; the most part of those were 'new cases' (n=54), 39patients manifested pulmonary form of the disease and 49 of the sample had no indication of supervised treatment; TB-HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) co-infection was observed in 24 cases. CONCLUSION: the high proportion of notified 'new cases' raises concerns, since TB should be diagnosed and treated by primary care; the study highlights the importance of adequate filling of the notification form by health professionals.
