OBJECTIVE: to describe the impact of pandemic influenza (H1N1) 2009 and respiratory diseases on mortality of women at childbearing age (WCA), and characterize epidemiological those deaths. METHODS: a mixed study of case series and case control of WCA (10 to 49 years old) deaths reported to the Brazilian Mortality Information System in the period 2008-2009, in the Municipalities situated in the 6th Regional Health Coordination/Health Secretariat of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. RESULTS: during the period of the study, 421 deaths occurred in WCA and the mortality rate observed was 111.4/100.000 (2008) and 117.4/100.000 (2009); considering all deaths, 5.7% were maternal deaths; pregnancy and postpartum were characteristics more frequent in death due to Pandemic Influenza than in death due to other causes. CONCLUSION: the WCA mortality profile in 2009 changed as result of increase in deathsfrom respiratory diseases, including pandemic influenza (H1N1) 2009.
