OBJECTIVE: to characterize victims of motorcycle accidents in three Brazilian capitals, Rio Branco-AC, Vitoria-ES and Palmas-TO. METHODS: a descriptive study based on data of the National Inquiry of Accident Injuries and Violence (VIVA Project 2007), performed by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. RESULTS: in 3,324 victims of accidents of all causes which occurred in September 2007, 46.0% were due to traffic accidents; the distribution of accidents involving motocycles was 52.0% in Rio Branco-AC, 39.9% in Vitoria-ES, and 27.2% in Palmas-TO; social-demographic pattern of adolescent and young adult males with average schooling and living in urban areas (in Vitoria-ES, victims were non-residents) has prevailed; drivers were preferential victims (75.0%), and alcohol consumption was suspected in 20.0% of events; the mostfrequent injuries involved legs - cut/perforation/laceration lesions (339%) -, and 20.7% exhibited broken bones. CONCLUSION: the setting points to needs of effective continuous monitoring and guarantee of safe preventive measures.
