OLIVEIRA, Paulo Henrique de  y  MATTOS, Inês Echenique. Prevalence of functional disability and associated factors among institutionalized elders in the Municipality of Cuiabá, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil, 2009-2010. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2012, vol.21, n.3, pp.395-406. ISSN 1679-4974.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742012000300005.

OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the prevalence of disability and associated factors in institutionalized elders. METHODS: cross-sectional study with 154 elders (≥60 years) in long term care institutions in the municipality of Cuiabá-MT, Brazil, since November2009 to January 2010; prevalences of dependency in Basic Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) were estimated by Katz and Lawton scales, and prevalence ratios by strata of independent variables; Poisson regression was usedfor adjustment. RESULTS: prevalence of dependence in ADL was 44.0%; individuals withoutfamily contact and reporting regular/bad health were twice as likely to have ADL dependency; prevalence of dependence in IADL was 88.7%, associated with female sex, absence of family contact and cognitive impairment. CONCLUSION: the prevalence of dependency in ADL in institutionalized elders was 6.4 times higher than observed in those living in the community, and IADL dependence was 3.0 times higher, although risk factors associated are similar in both groups.
