OBJECTIVE: to assess and compare knowledge of nurses and doctors of Family Health Strategy (FHS) on mandatory notifiable diseases. METHODS: cross-sectional study with 147 nurses and 135 doctors of FHS, in the municipality of Teresina, state of Piauí, Brazil, in 2010. RESULTS: the most part of interviewed nurses (78.6%) and doctors (75.8%) showed dopamine on concepts, with no statistically significant differences (p=0.570); there was statistically significant difference between nurses and doctors knowledge about negative reporting (95.9% versus 82.9%; p<0.001), mandatory reporting of exogenous poisoning (43.8% versus 30.1%; p=0.030) and immediate notification of botulism (58.3% versus 75.9%;p=0.004); deficiencies were identified on concepts and examples on mandatory notifiable diseases, immediate notification and eradicated diseases. CONCLUSION: the professionals presented deficiencies in knowledge about notification and their training with emphasis on mandatory reporting is recommended.
