TEIXEIRA, Renato Azeredo; VALENTE, Joaquim Gonçalves e FRANCA, Elisabeth Barboza. Mortality from cervical cancer in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, 2004-2006: analysis of magnitude and regional differences of corrected cause-specific deaths. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2012, vol.21, n.4, pp.549-559. ISSN 1679-4974. http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742012000400004.
OBJECTIVE: to compare mortality rates by cervical cancer (CC) in the health administrative macro-regions of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 2004-2006, before and after correction of mortality data. METHODS: correction of raw data from the Brazilian Mortality Information System (MIS) considering estimated under-reporting of deaths, unspecified causes of cancer-related deaths, cancers on female genitalia or unspecified portions of the uterus, and ill-defined causes; relative percentage variation (RPV) was used to quantify the difference between cervical mortality rates before and after correction, and as socioeconomic indicator, the Human Development Index (HDI). RESULTS: the differences varied through the State, showing the widest corrections related to the regions with the least HDI; Northeastern macro-region presented the highest RPV (232%). CONCLUSION: corrected cause-specific mortality rates due to CC-related mortality in Minas Gerais were higher than the crude rates observed in MIS data.
