OBJECTIVE: to describe temporal trend and distribution of caesarian section in Brazil and its macro-regions, in the period 1994-2009. METHODS: data were extracted from Live Born Information System (Sinasc), of Brazilian Health System, from 1994 to 1999 for the whole country and its macro-regions. RESULTS: cesarean section proportion during the analyzed time rangedfrom 23.3% to 55.7% in Northeast in 1994 and in Southeast in 2008, respectively; in the whole countrytheproportion ranged from 32.0 to 48.4%; trend of increase was observed for all regions except Midwest. CONCLUSION: the proportion of cesarean section in Brazil is higher than that observed in wealthier countries; different coverage of the Sinasc through the studied years could have induced the variations in the observed data; such findings reinforce the importance of more effective measures to decrease the high caesarian proportions.
