SANTOS, Juliana Dias Pereira dos et al. Indicators of effectiveness of the Unified Health System Smoking Cessation Program in Minas Gerais, Brazil, 2008. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2012, vol.21, n.4, pp.579-588. ISSN 1679-4974. http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742012000400007.
OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the effectiveness indicators of the Tobacco Addiction Treatment Program of 60 municipalities in the State of Minas Gerais in 2008; offered by the Brazilian Public Health System. METHODS: An ecologic study was conducted. We described the indicators of effectiveness and calculated the Relative Risk (RR; CI95%) to evaluate the association between the medication intake (>65.0% of users with medication support) and the program success (>50.0% of users not smoking up to the fourth session. RESULTS: The program is available in only 7.0% of municipalities of Minas Gerais; shows important heterogeneity in its indicators. The average rate of retention was 71.8% (CI95%: 67.1-76.5), of cessation was 40.5% (CI95%: 34.3-46.5) and use of medication was 57.8% (CI95%: 49.2-6613). We found a strong association between medication use and cessation (RR 2.29; CI95%: 1.42-3.66, p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The program seems to be effective, and shows better performance in municipalities in which drug treatment was offered to more than 60.0% of patients.
