Abstract

JUNQUEIRA, Rozania Maria Pereira  and  DUARTE, Elisabeth Carmen. Factors associated to hospital deaths in the Federal District, Brazil, 2008. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.1, pp.29-39. ISSN 1679-4974.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742013000100003.

OBJECTIVE: to identify risk factors associated with hospital death in the Federal District, Brazil. METHODS: evaluation of all admissions (non-obstetric or psychiatric admissions) recorded in Hospital Admission Authorization Forms (AIH) and consolidated in Brazil's Unified Health System (SIH/SUS), in 2008; logistic models were estimated to identify characteristics of patients, hospital admissions and hospitals, associated with hospital death. RESULTS: the overall hospital mortality rate (HMR) was 4.2%, considering 133,098 AIH evaluated; higher HMR were found in male patients, aged 60 years or older, living in satellite cities of the Federal District, admitted by emergency rooms, mainly due to chronic diseases; risk of death increased with longer hospital and intensive car unit stay. CONCLUSION: it was possible to study factors associated with risk of death based on hospital data available in the SIH/SUS; study findings may improve monitoring of hospital care performances in the Federal District.
