Abstract

VALADARES, Adriane Feitosa; RODRIGUES C. FILHO, José  and  PELUZIO, Joênes Mucci. Impact of dengue in two major cities of the state of Tocantins: infestation and environmental factors (2000-2010). Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.1, pp.59-66. ISSN 1679-4974.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742013000100006.

OBJECTIVE: to describe the incidence of dengue and investigate its correlation with vector density and climatic conditions in the two most populous cities of the state of Tocantins, Brazil, between 2000 and 2010. METHODS: an ecological study in the municipalities of Palmas and Araguaína, with secondary data from the following information systems: Notifiable Diseases (Sinan), Yellow Fever and Dengue (Sisfad) andNational Institute of Meteorology. RESULTS: 23,614 confirmed cases of dengue were reported. Incidence peaked in 2007 (1,647/100,000 inhabitants). There was no significant correlation (p>0.05) between the dengue incidence rate and the Building Infestation Index (r=0.59), average rainfall (r=-0.04) and average temperature (r=0.21 in the rainy season and r=0.10 in the dry season). CONCLUSION: climatic conditions were not determining factors in the proliferation of dengue; however, they provide ideal conditions for vector reproduction.
