Abstract

ESCOSTEGUY, Claudia Caminha et al. Age differences in the clinical and epidemiological pattern of severe dengue cases treated during the 2008 epidemic in Rio de Janeiro. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.1, pp.67-76. ISSN 1679-4974.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742013000100007.

OBJETIVE: to describe the clinical and epidemiological profile of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue fever with complications (DFC) patients treated at a federal hospital during the 2008 outbreak. METHODS: descriptive study using national Notifiable Diseases Information System data, supplemented by local epidemiological surveillance data. Cases were described by agegroup (children: ≤12years; adolescents: 13-19; adults: ≥20). RESULTS: 435 reported cases (DFC=78.9%; DHF=21.1%), 22.5% children, 17.9% teenagers and59.5% adults. Most frequent complaints were headache, myalgia and retro-orbital pain in adults and teenagers; abdominal pain in children and teenagers; vomiting and cutaneous rash in children. Hemorrhagic manifestations occurred in 62.8% regardless of age group. Plasma leakage occurred more in children (62.2%; p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: knowing that more plasma leakage-related alterations occurred in children is relevant for healthcare planning.
