SILVA, Carla Carolina Alexandrino Vicente da; ANDRADE, Maria Sandra  e  CARDOSO, Mirian Domingos. Factors associated with tuberculosis treatment default in individuals monitored in health reference units of the city of Recife, Pernambuco State, Brazil, from 2005 to 2010. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.1, pp.77-85. ISSN 1679-4974.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742013000100008.

OBJECTIVE: to identify factors associated with tuberculosis treatment default in individuals monitored in two health reference units of the city of Recife, Pernambuco state, Brazil. METHODS: case-control study with data of the reportable disease database (Sinan) recorded during the period of 2005 to 2010. Cases involving treatment default were compared with cured controls. Logistic regression models were fitted. RESULTS: 610 individuals were studied, 104 cases (17.0%) and 506 controls (93.0%). In multivariate analysis, a higher chance of treatment default was observed among individuals with no education (OR: 4.9, CI95%: 1.4-16.7) or those with education level lower than elementary school (OR: 2.5; CI95%: 1.1-6.1) compared to those with secondary or university level; and among individuals with a history of previous treatment default when compared with those without previous history (OR: 7.4, CI95%: 2.3-23.7). CONCLUSION: low educational level and previous history were the factors associated with default.
