Resumen

COSTA, Juvenal Soares Dias da et al. Evolution of mortality from external causes in Pelotas city and in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, 1996-2009. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.2, pp.215-224. ISSN 1679-4974.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742013000200003.

OBJECTIVE: to describe mortality from external causes in Pelotas-RS city and Rio Grande do Sul (RS) state between 1996 and 2009 and investigate its time trend. METHODS: We conducted an ecological study of Mortality Information System data. Mortality rates were calculated by biennia and analyzed using Poisson regression. RESULTS: mortality rates were higher among men and among those over 39 years. In Pelotas there were significant reductions in mortality rates from road traffic accidents in men up to 39 years whilst homicide rates increased by 11% in men aged 15-39 years. In Rio Grande do Sul state mortality rates from other external causes decreased by 11% in the period whilst homicides increased by 6% in men aged 15-39 years. CONCLUSION: mortality rates from external causes maintain constant. This problem is a priority and requires efforts in the articulation of social policies.
