OBJECTIVE: to describe hospital admissions owing to external causes in Belo Horizonte between 2008 and 2010. METHODS: Data were extractedfrom the Unified Health System (SUS) Hospital Information System. We calculated hospital admission rates by cause, age group, sex and male/female ratio. RESULTS: the primary cause of hospital admissions in both sexes and by age group was other external causes of accidental injuries (36.9/10,000 inhabitants). Falls were the most prevalent complaint among this group, followed by road traffic accidents (8.2/10,000 inhabitants). CONCLUSION: the results highlighted falls, road traffic accidents and assaults as the main complaints. Despite being limited, hospital morbidity information is of extreme importance for situational diagnosis and enables the definition of actions to prevent external causes.
