Abstract

ALMEIDA, Ana Paula Braz de et al. Potential years of life lost because of road traffic accidents in Pernambuco state, Brazil, 2007. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.2, pp.235-242. ISSN 1679-4974.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742013000200005.

OBJECTIVE: to estimate potential years of life lost (PYLL) because of road traffic accidents in Pernambuco state, Brazil. METHODS: descriptive study of road traffic deaths among people aged 1 to 69 years living in the city of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. Data was obtained from the Brazilian National Mortality Database for the year 2007. The number of PYLL and PYLL rate per 100,000 people were calculated. RESULTS: overall number of PYLL was 104.3 years per 100,000 people. Motorcyclists accounted for the highest number of PYLL (28.4 years per 100,000). The number of PYLL was higher in males (923.9 years), when compared to females, and in those aged 20-39 years for all types of road traffic accidents. CONCLUSION: given the high number of PYLL from motorcycle-related injuries, actions for injury prevention especially targeting motorcyclists are needed.
