Abstract

ALVES, Marta Maria Malheiros; NOMELLINI, Patrícia Ferreira  and  PRANCHEVICIUS, Maria Cristina da Silva. Occupational mortality in Tocantins State, Brazil: a descriptive study 2000-2010. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.2, pp.243-254. ISSN 1679-4974.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742013000200006.

OBJECTIVE: to characterize fatal occupational accidents in the Brazilian State of Tocantins and evaluate Mortality Information System (SIM) information quality. METHODS: descriptive ecological study of SIM data between2000 and2010. RESULTS: 400fatal occupational accidents were reported in this study, predominantly males aged 20 to 49 working in the farming, transport and civil construction sectors. The mortality coefficient was stable (p=0.56) in the period at 6.7 and 9.6/100,000 workers in 2000 and 2010 respectively. Despite the reduction in theproportion of deaths with ill-defined causes, the completeness of information on the relationship between death andoccupation remained below 20% in the period. CONCLUSION: theprofile found may not reflect the actual universe of fatal occupational accidents, demonstrating the need to improve information quality.
