RAMOS, Aleksandra Rosendo dos Santos; FERREIRA, Silvana Margarida Benevides  y  IGNOTT, Eliane. Deaths having leprosy as underlying cause among residents of Mato Grosso State, Brazil, 2000-2007. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.2, pp.273-284. ISSN 1679-4974.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742013000200009.

OBJECTIVE: to describe records of deaths from leprosy contained on the Mato Grosso Mortality Information System (SIM) and Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) from 2000 to 2007. METHODS: Cross-sectional epidemiological study analyzing deaths from leprosy registered on the SIM system from 2000 to 2007 and identified on SINAN system in Mato Grosso. RESULTS: 88 of the 129 registered leprosy deaths were identified on the SINAN system as leprosy cases. 36 of these had been discharged after being cured. The most frequent primary cause of death was nonspecific leprosy (n = 88, 75.9%). CONCLUSION: half the leprosy death records in Mato Grosso include cured cases and these therefore did not die from leprosy. The cured and those who died during polychemotherapy were characterized by older age, low education level or having been lepromatous cases.
