METHODS: a descriptive study of the Catanduva SAMU medical case urgency screening database of call-outs made between January 2006 and August 2012. RESULTS: 76,296 occurrences were studied. The predominant sex was male (49.9%) with average age of 46.9 years. Clinical disorders were the most frequent type of occurrence (50.7%) followed by surgery and external causes (26.8%). The Advanced Life Support Unit was used in 11% of cases. Most patients were admitted to tertiary hospitals (64.3%). CONCLUSION: The care provided by Catanduva SAMU has a high tendency of referring patients to tertiary hospitals. Medical case urgency screening therefore has shortcomings.
