Abstract

RODRIGUES, Poliany Cristiny de Oliveira; IGNOTTI, Eliane  and  HACON, Sandra de Souza. Spatial and temporal distribution of burning and hospitalizations for respiratory diseases in children in the state of Rondônia, 2001-2010. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.3, pp.455-464. ISSN 1679-4974.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742013000300010.

OBJECTIVE: to describe the spatial and temporal distribution of agricultural burning and respiratory disease hospitalizations in children aged under five in the State of Rondônia, Brazil. METHODS: ecological study of the temporal and spatial distribution of crude and standardized hospitalization rates for respiratory diseases in children aged under five and agricultural burning in the regions of the state of Rondônia, 2001-2010, using Kernel estimates. RESULTS: all the regions showed a reduction in the percentage of hospitalization rates for respiratory diseases in children (-39.0%) as well as in the number of agricultural burnings (-15.0%) over the years studied. Hospitalization rates were highest in the central and southeast regions of the state. Burning was concentrated in the northwest of the state. CONCLUSION: hospitalization rates and the number of burnings reduced. The areas with the highest number of burnings differed from those with higher rates of hospitalization.
