Abstract

OBJECTIVE: to describe the profile of victims of violence and accidents treated in Public Emergency Departments, in 2011. METHODS: cross-sectional study with victims treated in 71 emergency departments in 24 Brazilian state capitals and the Federal District. Data were collected from randomly selected 12-hour shifts for 30 consecutive days. RESULTS: the proportion of accidents (90.4%) was higher than that of violence (9.6%). Predominance of mulatto male victims, aged 20 to 39, with 9-11 years of schooling. CONCLUSION: the profile of patients attended at Public Emergency Departments demonstrates the magnitude of violence and accidents as a major public health problem, as well as identifying the most vulnerable victims.
