SCUSSIATO, Louise Aracema; SARQUIS, Leila Maria Mansano; KIRCHHOF, Ana Lúcia Cardoso  e  KALINKE, Luciana Puchalski. Epidemiological profile of serious accidents at work in the State of Paraná, Brazil, 2007-2010. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.4, pp.621-630. ISSN 1679-4974.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S1679-49742013000400008.

OBJECTIVE: to describe the profile of serious accidents at work in the state of Paraná and to estimate their incidence between 2007 and 2010. METHODS: a retrospective and descriptive epidemiological study using secondary data from the records of serious accidents at work held on the Notifiable Injuries Information System - (Sinan). RESULTS: in the period studied the number of accidents increased (from 709 to 2002) as did incidence (from 12/100.000 to 35.8/100.000 members of the economically active population). Most affected workers were young (28.9%), male (88.4%), Caucasian (69.7%), with secondary education (21.5%), working in mining and quarrying and construction industries (13.9%). The majority (89.9%) required hospital outpatient or inpatient treatment and 56.3% suffered temporary disability. CONCLUSION: the high number of serious workplace accidents reported indicates the need for companies to provide protective equipment and adequate working environments as well as the need for workers to use such equipment.
