OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the completeness, consistency and duplicity of cases of violence registered on the National Disease Notification Information System in Recife-PE, Brazil, 2009-2012. METHODS: descriptive study. The quality of this database was evaluated regarding the completeness and consistency of 35 variables and non-duplicity of records each year. Chi square for trend (p<0.05) was calculated. RESULTS: A 283.9% increase was observed in the number of notifications. The average percentage of completeness, consistency and duplicity was 70.3%, 98.5% and 0.2%, respectively. Comparing the number of notifications recorded in the 2009 and 2012, there was a 53.9% decrease in the degree of completeness and an increase of 66.7% in consistency. The percentage of duplicated cases was zero in 2009 and 0.5% in 2012. CONCLUSION: the average percentage of completeness, consistency and duplicity was considered regular, excellent e acceptable, respectively.
