Abstract

CARDOSO, Evangeline Maria. Work-related morbidity and mortality in Amazonas State, Brazil, 2000-2011. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2014, vol.23, n.1, pp.143-153. ISSN 1679-4974.

OBJECTIVE: to describe workplace accident incidence and mortality in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. METHODS: descriptive study using 2000-2011 data from the following information systems: Social Security (MPS); Communicable Diseases (Sinan); and Mortality (SIM). We calculated incidence, mortality, lethality and Potential Years of Life Lost (PYLL). RESULTS: AEPS recorded 56,365 accidents, 371 of which were fatal. It also showed a reduction in mortality and lethality between 2000 and 2011. Sinan recorded 1,542 injuries. SIM recorded 567 work-related deaths, 70% of which werefrom external causes and did not have their relationship to work specified. PYLL owing to workplace accidents were estimated to be 21,291.50. CONCLUSION: information was overwhelmingly fragmented, cases were under-reported and there was little notification of communicable diseases by health professionals. This hindered epidemiological analysis.
