Abstract

SILVA, Osvaldinete Lopes de Oliveira et al. Food and nutrition surveillance of indigenous children aged under five in Mato Grosso do Sul, 2002-2011. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2014, vol.23, n.3, pp.541-546. ISSN 1679-4974.

OBJECTIVE: to describe the evolution of the Food and Nutrition Surveillance System (SISVAN) and the nutritional status of indigenous children aged under five between 2002 and 2011 in state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. METHODS: this was a descriptive study based on Mato Grosso do Sul Special Indigenous Health District management report data relating to all old indigenous children aged under five monitored in the period 2002-2011 according to weight-for-age. RESULTS: we found that indigenous SISVAN coverage increased from 82.0% in 2002 to 97.2% in 2011, accompanied by a reduction in underweight prevalence from 16.0% to 6.5%. CONCLUSION: in the study period there was an increase in indigenous SISVAN coverage and a significant reduction in child malnutrition. However, the promotion of child health and nutrition in this population still faces considerable challenges.
