MALTA, Deborah Carvalho et al. Trends in Self-reported Diabetes among adults in Brazilian state capitals, 2006-2012. Epidemiol. Serv. Saúde [online]. 2014, vol.23, n.4, pp.753-760. ISSN 1679-4974.
OBJECTIVE: to analyze trends in self-reported diabetes mellitusprevalence in Brazilian state capitals, 2006-2012. METHODS: Data from a telephone survey conducted in state capitals were analyzed by simple linear regression, taking the indicator value as the dependent variable and survey year as the explanatory variable. RESULTS: an increasing trend from 5.7% to 7.4 % was found in this period in adults in Brazilian capitals (p=0.008). Prevalence increased in males from 4.8% to 6.5% and in females from 6.4% to 8.1%. The increase in females occurred in 9 capitals: Belém, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Macapá, Macéio, Palmas, Recife, Rio Branco and Vitória, whilst in males it occurred in 6: Boa Vista, Florianópolis, Fortaleza, Rio Branco, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo. CONCLUSION: diabetes mellitus has increased in several Brazilian capitals. Monitoring diabetes and risk factor trends is useful for health planning.
