Abstract

This article intends to discuss an epistemological cut concerning the área of Anthropology in the 1930s. This epistemological cut opened the question of cultural translation, which will be discussed in the context of two expeditions held in the Amazon region: the ethnological expedition to Serra do Norte, at Mato Grosso State, 1938, led by Claude Lévi-Strauss, and accompanied by the Brazilian anthropologist, Luiz de Castro Faria, representing the Museu Nacional and the Conselho de Fiscalização das Expedições Artísticas e Científicas; and an expedition to Gurupá, Pará State, 1948, which was coordinated by Charles Wagley, and accompanied by Eduardo Galvão, also representing the Museu Nacional. The epistemological cut is ilustrated by an event that took place at the International Institute for Intelectual Cooperation, in Paris, 1934, in which Malinowski was involved. Our analysis considers that those expeditions belonged to the same rational theoretical field, in spite of the fact that they appeared during different social scientific contexts.
