Resumen

WERMELINGER, Eduardo Dias  y  FERREIRA, Aldo Pacheco. Insect vector control methods: a study of classifications. Rev Pan-Amaz Saude [online]. 2013, vol.4, n.3, pp.49-54. ISSN 2176-6215.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/S2176-62232013000300007.

In order to observing the stability and consistency of methods to control insect vectors, it was analyzed how those methods have been classified in literature. Twenty-two classifications were revised from textbooks, manuals, and technical publications, giving special attention from the World Health Organizations ones (five). The chemical control was presented in 22 classifications and the biological control in 20. Furthermore, the most methods presented were environmental management (13), mechanical control (nine), cultural control (six), physical, legal, genetic controls and personal protection (five, each). Frequently, techniques were included in different methods as bed nets, repellents, genetically modified insects and elimination of breeding sites. Many differences were found among all classifications, showing contradictions, divergences and gaps. It was not possible to identify a standard and stable classification. It was concluded that there is no coherent and stable theoretical scope able to guide the use of the different control techniques available, in integrated and synergistic manner, in the integrated vector management projects.
