MARTINES, Guilherme Augusto; DAMBROS, Miriam  y  TAMANINI, José Tadeu Nunes. Effect of strength training on the gain of muscle strength in the lower limbs of women with stress urinary incontinence. Rev Pan-Amaz Saude [online]. 2014, vol.5, n.4, pp.29-36. ISSN 2176-6215.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a training protocol using five strengthening exercises on the gain of muscle strength in the lower limbs of women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and their impact on quality of life. The sample included 30 women with SUI clinical diagnostic. This study lasted six months and the methodology was pre and post intervention data comparison, and during the first three months, the sample was characterized as the control group; and in the next three months, patients were the intervention group and subjected to the established study protocol consisting of the following exercises: leg press 45o; knee extension and flexion; adduction and abduction held in specific chair for muscle strength gain in the lower limbs. SUI subjective evaluation was made by the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire - Short Form (ICIQ-SF) and the objective one by Pad test. At the end of the study, after 12-week intervention, women showed a statistically significant increase of at least 30% in muscle strength with all exercises performed, except with the abductor in which earnings were approximately 20% compared to the pre-intervention. In parallel, there was a statistically significant reduction in urinary leakage evaluated by Pad Test and the final ICIQ-SF. The established protocol led to strengthening the muscles in the lower limbs, subjective and objective reduction of SUI, as well as improved quality of life.
