INTRODUCTION: American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) is a serious public health problem in many countries, especially in Brazil. OBJECTIVE: Demonstrating the epidemiological profile of that disease in Alagoas State from 2007 to 2013 in order to be an indicator for the redirection of the State actions in the healthcare field. METHODS: This study consisted of a retrospective, descriptive survey based on data reported and registered in the Notifiable Diseases Information System. The current study presented the number of confirmed cases of ACL in that State. RESULTS: During the study period, 547 cases were reported, affecting a greater number of males in the age group of 24-39 years old. The cutaneous form presented higher numbers comparing to the mucosal form. CONCLUSION: Therefore, it can be considered that the ACL is a disease that persists in Alagoas, due to several factors that contribute to its transmission.
