NUNES, Marília Lavocat et al. Evidence of hantavirus circulation in a silent area of the Amazon Region. Rev Pan-Amaz Saude [online]. 2015, vol.6, n.4, pp.63-67. ISSN 2176-6215.

OBJECTIVE: Reporting the epidemiological field investigation to detect hantavirus circulation in silent area of the Amazon Region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An epidemiological field investigation was carried out to detect hantavirus circulation in wild rodents in the Municipality of Capixaba, Acre State, Brazil, that is considered a silent disease area. 490 traps were installed per day, on three consecutive days, numbering 1,470 for the collection period at new moon. Captured animals were euthanized to collect of samples of blood and organs and skeletal preservation. The samples were analyzed by the Instituto Evandro Chagas of the Secretariat of Health Surveillance, Brazil's Ministry of Health by enzyme immunoassay (ELISA), serological technique used for IgG detection. RESULTS: In total 93 wild rodents were captured with a capture success of 6.3%. Of the rodents captured, the species with the highest percentage of samples was Oligoryzomys microtis with 94.6%. Five positive tests for hantavirus, four of them are O. microtis and one Proechimys cuvieri. CONCLUSION: Evidence of hantavirus circulation was proven in wild rodents in Municipality of Capixaba. O. microtis species is the reservoir of Rio Mamoré virus, a pathogenic hantavirus.
