Influenza is recognized worldwide for its ability to generate epidemic and pandemic waves with notes of the main virological, clinical and epidemiological features, including mortality and lethality and the context of its occurrence in pandemic character. The structure of the Brazilian health care system in front of the history of pandemics is briefly characterized. Surveillance aspects in different animals are also discussed, due to the possible spread of the Influenza virus into the human population. The historical approach contributes to warn about the importance of Influenza as respiratory virus of zoonotic character, high transmission capacity and global distribution and the growing necessity of effective answer from governments.
