INTRODUCTION:
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the diseases responsible for the increase in premature births, as well as being associated with intrauterine growth restriction, intellectual disability and secondary complications related to the mother.
OBJECTIVES:
Identifying the bacterial species and demonstrating the antimicrobial susceptibility profile (in vitro) of isolated urine samples of pregnant women in a public hospital in the southeast of Pará State, Brazil.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
It was conducted a descriptive, prospective and cross-sectional study. The technical procedure of microbiological analysis of samples followed the recommendations of the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency and the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute.
RESULTS:
We analyzed 86 summary examinations of urine of 86 pregnant women, 38.4% were positive for UTI and 76% of patients did not have any request form for urine culture test. Escherichia coli was found in 36.4% of the UTI, the susceptibility profile for meropenem, rifampicin and vancomycin was 100% effective against the tested strains while beta-lactam antibiotics did not perform well.
CONCLUSION:
These results reinforce the necessity to follow the recommendations for the correct diagnosis and the effective treatment of UTI in pregnant women in order to avoid the frequent occurrence of perinatal complications, highlighting the important role of the antimicrobial susceptibility test.
