Abstract
GONCALVES, Denival de Lira and BRASIL, Davi do Socorro Barros. Environmental problems and sustainability in Amazonia Tocantina floodplains: a study about Agroextrativist Settlement Project São João Batista II, Abaetetuba, Pará State, Brazil. Rev Pan-Amaz Saude [online]. 2016, vol.7, n.4, pp.89-99. ISSN 2176-6215. http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/s2176-62232016000400011.
This study aimed to identify and reflect on the environmental problems in Amazonia Tocantina floodplains from the perspective of the Agroextractive Settlement Projects (PAE), as a means of reducing the abyss in an appropriation of nature, continuity of the use of natural resources and environmental conservation of theses projects. From October 1 to 30, 2015, a case study was conducted on a total population of 466 families living in PAE São João Batista II, in Municipality of Abaetetuba, Pará State, Brazil. Semi-structured questionnaires were used, as well as in-depth interviews in a quantitative-qualitative approach, exploratory nature, aiming at understanding the interrelationships that characterize the reality of traditional populations of that community, environment of which is an integral part and the mitigation of damages caused in this ecosystem, besides bibliographic research, collection of secondary data in research institutions and technical and rural institutes. The results showed an occurrence of environmental problems, since the process of occupation of areas has caused negative consequences with respect to the pursuit of economic development in a sustainable way and the conservation of the physical environment. It is believed that public policies to mitigate problems caused by human activities and targeted actions of Environmental Education will enable a socio-environmental citizen's formation and the construction of habits, knowledge and skills, related to the understanding and use of natural assets in order to be committed to the environmental conservation and sustainability of Amazonia Tocantina floodplains.
