OLIVEIRA, Consuelo Silva de et al. Monitoring of pregnant women with laboratory confirmed Zika virus infection in the metropolitan region of Belém, Pará State, Brazil: preliminary data. Rev Pan-Amaz Saude [online]. 2016, vol.7, n.esp, pp.209-211. ISSN 2176-6215.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/s2176-62232016000500023.

Zika virus is an emerging arbovirus and, since its occurrence in the northeast Brazil in May 2015, it has dispersed rapidly to most of the Latin American and Caribbean countries. Most people infected with Zika virus are asymptomatic; however in pregnant women the infection can cause serious complications to the fetus. A total of 60 pregnant women with exanthema, at an average gestational age of 20 weeks, were investigated for Zika virus infection (molecular biology and/or serology) with positive result. So far, no co-infection and no record of ultrasonographic changes or out comes indicating microcephaly or any other malformation have been identified.
