Medical entomology, especially the study of mosquitoes for the prophylaxis and control of diseases transmitted by them, is a discipline that emerged at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. The research on mosquitoes conducted in Rio de Janeiro by Oswaldo Cruz and his collaborators and disciples, such as Antonio Gonçalves Peryassú, was fundamental. Physician, public health specialist, professor, and researcher, Peryassú based much of his career on the knowledge acquired about mosquitoes, as we seek to outline.
