FONTES, Lucas dos Santos  y  BASTOS, Maria do Socorro Castelo Branco de Oliveira. Temporal trend of congenital and gestational syphilis in Pará State, Eastern Amazon, Brazil, from 2007 to 2020. Rev Pan-Amaz Saude [online]. 2024, vol.15, e202401463.  Epub 04-Abr-2024. ISSN 2176-6215.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/s2176-6223202401463.

OBJECTIVE:

To describe the temporal trend of congenital and gestational syphilis in the capital and 13 Administrative Regions of Pará State, Brazil, from 2007 to 2020.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

This time series study analyzed congenital syphilis incidence rates and gestational syphilis detection rates in Pará, as well as the trend in the capital, Belém, and 13 Administrative Regions from the state. Using data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System and the Live Births Information System, provided by the Pará State Health Department, simple linear and polynomial regression models were drawn up to check the trend in the occurrence of these diseases during the analyzed period.

RESULTS:

There was an upward trend in the detection rate of gestational syphilis in Pará, in Belém and 10 Administrative Regions. Three regions showed growth, followed by stabilization at high levels towards the end of the series. For congenital syphilis, there was an upward trend in incidence rates in nine Administrative Regions; in the state, there was growth followed by stabilization at high levels at the end of the series; and in Belém and three Administrative Regions, there was growth followed by a fall from 2017 onwards.

CONCLUSION:

In this region of the Eastern Amazon, there was mostly an upward trend in congenital and gestational syphilis during the study period. However, some regions showed stabilization at high levels or a downward trend at the end of the series.
