Abstract

VIANA, Ellen  and  LUCHS, Adriana. Human bocavirus: a comprehensive review of an emerging virus. Rev Pan-Amaz Saude [online]. 2024, vol.15, e202401617.  Epub Dec 20, 2024. ISSN 2176-6215.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5123/s2176-6223202401617.

In 2005, Allander and colleagues identified a new virus in nasopharyngeal lavage samples from children with respiratory infections of unknown etiology, named human bocavirus (HBoV). This emerging virus is globally recognized and associated with respiratory and gastrointestinal infections in both children and adults. Belonging to the genus Bocaparvovirus of the Parvoviridae family, HBoV has four distinct genotypes: HBoV-1, HBoV-2, HBoV-3, and HBoV-4. This review covers the taxonomy, genomic and protein structure, replication and pathogenesis processes, advances in diagnostic methods, as well as exploring the diversity of clinical manifestations and the epidemiology of HBoV, providing a comprehensive overview of its relevance to public health.

Keywords : Human Bocavirus; Respiratory Infections; Gastrointestinal Infections; Epidemiology.
