Viral dissemination in aquatic environments is extensive and often exceeds bacterial abundance. In Brazil, the assessment of the quality of freshwater used for recreation is based on bacterial indicators, such as thermotolerant coliforms, which show low specificity for human contamination and viral risk. Caratateua Island, located in the Metropolitan Region of Belém, Pará, is a popular bathing area but is marked by the absence of basic sanitation and the direct discharge of sewage into beaches, increasing public health risks.

OBJECTIVE:

To evaluate the viral and microbial diversity of Praia do Amor Beach, located on Caratateua Island, Outeiro District, Pará, during a monthly monitoring period between October 2023 and September 2024.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Monthly sampling was conducted between October 2023 and September 2024. Viral detection was performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and metagenomic characterization was carried out by next-generation sequencing.

RESULTS:

CrAssphage was detected in 91.6% of samples, rotavirus in 41.6%, and astrovirus and adenovirus in 8.3%. Microbiome analysis revealed 13 viral families, mainly Kyanoviridae, Straboviridae, and Autographviridae, and 521 bacterial families, with Vibrionaceae, Microbacteriaceae, and Pseudomonadaceae being the most prevalent.

CONCLUSION:

The results indicate significant fecal contamination of human origin in the waters of Praia do Amor Beach, highlighting the urgent need for improved sanitation in the surrounding area to protect public health and the local ecosystem.
