Gilberta Bensabath was born on July 30, 1924, in Cruzeiro do Sul, state of Acre, Brazil. She moved to Belém in 1930 and graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Pará on December 8, 1949. In January 1950, she was hired as a physician by the Special Public Health Service, working in the municipalities of Alenquer and Igarapé-Açu, state of Pará. From January 1960 onward, she joined the research team at the Evandro Chagas Institute, serving as its director from July 1975 to June 1976. In 1979, she founded and headed the Epidemiology Section of the institute, renamed as the Hepatology Section. In 1987, she published a pioneering article on hepatitis Delta virus infection in the Brazilian Amazon. Between August 1989 and December 1994, she coordinated studies on the immunogenicity, efficacy, and effectiveness of the hepatitis B vaccine in the municipality of Boca do Acre, state of Amazonas. In 2000, she was invited to establish and lead the newly created Epidemiology Service of the Evandro Chagas Institute, where she worked until 2015. She received several honors, notably the title of Officer of the Order of Medical Merit and the Medal of Oswaldo Cruz Merit in 1997. In 2005, she was honored by the Brazilian Society of Hepatology in the publication Memória da Hepatologia - Os Pioneiros (Memory of Hepatology - The Pioneers), and in 2013, she received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa awarded by the State University of Pará. She passed away on May 13, 2020, leaving an enduring example and a significant legacy to public health and Brazilian hepatology.
