Elisabeth Conceição de Oliveira Santos

Researcher and Director of the Evandro Chagas Institute/SVS/MS

The Evandro Chagas Institute (IEC), as a Research Institution that has built knowledge on Public Health and Biomedical Research throughout its 73 years of existence, could not remain indifferent to the need to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge in general, and, particularly, of the knowledge developed on the Continental Amazon, or Pan-Amazon, within the Institute or elsewhere in South America and in the world. According to the concept that knowledge can face no barriers, idiomatic differences included, its journal will be published in three languages: Portuguese, Spanish and English.

Since the emergence of the first scientific journals in 1665, "Journal des Sqavans" and "Philosophical Transaction of the Royal Society", in France and England, respectively, periodicals have played a crucial role among the media available in the dissemination of scientific knowledge. Published on a quarterly basis, our Pan-Amazonian Journal of Health has come to embrace the interdisciplinary character of the health sector, including the development of original research in the areas of Biomedical Sciences, Environment, Public Health and Medical Anthropology, covering subjects related to the fields of education, research and health care.

For the professional involved in issues of Public Health and Biomedical Research, publishing is one of the working commitments: studying, learning, creating new procedures, improving the existing ones, finding new ways, changing paradigms, allowing humanity to dream and ride an ever-ascending path. It is the researcher's first step to return the information acquired through actions, studies and projects to society - which invests its resources in research institutes and universities. From this moment on, all this obtained knowledge can be disseminated and applied.

Knowledge is the main factor when it comes to defeating inequalities, enhancing value, creating skilled jobs, propagating welfare and generating technology. Our Journal will follow the market trend of academic publishing. Not only will it be published in printed form, but also electronically, shortening the distances in this world. This seems an invaluable step towards the spread of knowledge and the reduction of social inequalities, for it will disseminate innovative ideas, emerging technologies, case reports, reviews of research and education in general, facilitating access to knowledge in three languages.

This is the beginning. In the future - who knows? - broader horizons, other languages...
