MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS:  O látex foi diluído em água destilada e, utilizando o teste de Allium cepa (cebola), foi feita a medição das raízes, verificada a presença de micronúcleos e de aberrações cromossômicas, e calculado o índice mitótico. Foram utilizados os seguintes tratamentos: controle negativo com água destilada; controle positivo com 0,0006 mg/L de sulfato de cobre; e os grupos teste 0,8%, 0,4%, 0,2%, 0,1%, 0,05% e 0,025%, contendo o látex diluído, com 10 repetições cada. A avaliação estatística dos dados foi realizada no programa Graphpad Prism® v5.01 com a análise de variância ANOVA, seguida do teste de Tukey com nível de significância de p &lt; 0,05.  RESULTADOS:  O látex demonstrou ação antiproliferativa citotóxica sobre o ciclo celular das raízes das cebolas, influenciando o processo de divisão celular, pois foi observado um aumento do número de prófase, as quais não progrediram para a próxima fase do ciclo mitótico, indicando atividade citotóxica.  CONCLUSÃO:  O presente estudo evidenciou um efeito mutagênico/genotóxico do látex da planta em células meristemáticas de Allium cepa, pois todos os tratamentos, com exceção da concentração de 0,4%, apresentaram médias elevadas de micronúcleos em comparação com o grupo controle.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  OBJECTIVE:  To evaluate the mutagenicity, genotoxicity, and in vivo cytotoxicity of Synadenium grantii Hook, f. (Euphorbiaceae) latex.  MATERIALS AND METHODS:  The latex was diluted in distilled water and the Allium cepa (onion) test was used to measure the roots, verify the presence of micronuclei and chromosomal aberrations, and calculate the mitotic index. The following treatments were used: negative control with distilled water; positive control with 0.0006 mg/L copper sulphate; and the test groups 0.8%, 0.4%, 0.2%, 0.1%, 0.05%, and 0.025% containing the diluted latex with 10 replicates each. Data statistical analysis was performed using Graphpad Prism® v5.01 with ANOVA variance analysis, followed by the Tukey test with significance level of p &lt; 0.05.  RESULTS:  Latex showed cytotoxic antiproliferative action on the cell cycle of onions roots, influencing the process of cell division as an increase in the number of prophases was observed, which did not progress to the next phase of the mitotic cycle, indicating cytotoxic activity.  CONCLUSION:  The present study evidenced a mutagenic/genotoxic effect of plant latex on Allium cepa meristematic cells, since all treatments, except for the concentration of 0.4%, presented high micronuclei media in comparison with the control group.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN  OBJETIVO: Evaluar la mutagenicidad/genotoxicidad y citotoxicidad in vivo del látex del Lechero Africano (Synadenium grantii Hook. f., Euphorbiaceae).  MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: El látex se diluyó en agua destilada y, utilizando la prueba de Allium cepa (cebolla), se midieron las raíces, verificando la presencia de micronúcleos y de aberraciones cromosómicas, y se calculó el índice mitótico. Fueron usados los siguientes tratamientos: control negativo con agua destilada; control positivo con 0,0006 mg/L de sulfato de cobre; y los grupos test 0,8%, 0,4%, 0,2%, 0,1%, 0,05% y 0,025%, conteniendo el látex diluido, con 10 repeticiones cada. La evaluación estadística de los datos se realizó en el programa Graphpad Prism® v5.01 con el análisis de la varianza ANOVA, seguida del test de Tukey con un nivel de significancia de p &lt; 0,05.  RESULTADOS: El látex demostró acción antiproliferativa citotóxica sobre el ciclo celular de las raíces de las cebollas, influyendo en el proceso de división celular, pues se observó un aumento del número de profase, las cuales no progresaron a la próxima fase del ciclo mitótico, indicando actividad citotóxica.  CONCLUSIÓN: El presente estudio evidenció un efecto mutagénico/genotóxico del látex de la planta en células meristemáticas de Allium cepa, ya que todos los tratamientos, con excepción de la concentración de 0,4%, presentaron promedios elevados de micronúcleos en comparación con el grupo control.]]></p></abstract>
