Candida albicans is pathogenic for man and became resistant to antifungal agents, therefore it is important in the search of new antifungals. The study aimed to investigate the mechanism of action of Cymbopogon winterianus essential oil against C. albicans. Morphological changes were observed in C. albicans when exposed to several concentrations of oil by microculture technique for yeasts, using agar-rice in moist chamber. Cellular leakage was analyzed after cell lysis by absorbing compounds at 260 nm; it was also assessed the bind of essential oil with ergosterol. C. winterianus essential oil inhibited the formation of pseudohyphae and chlamydoconidia in all concentrations tested, it caused cellular lysis and the minimum inhibitory concentration of the oil in presence of ergosterol increased until eight times, indicating binding to ergosterol.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[RESUMO Candida spp. são patógenos oportunistas e comensais presentes em praticamente todos os seres humanos. Candida albicans é considerado patogênico para o homem, tornando-se resistente aos antifúngicos, por isso sendo importante na busca de novos antifúngicos. O estudo teve como objetivo investigar o mecanismo de ação do óleo essencial de Cymbopogon winterianus contra C. albicans. Observaram-se alterações morfológicas em C. albicans quando exposto a várias concentrações de óleo pela técnica de microcultura para leveduras, utilizando agar-arroz em câmara úmida. O vazamento celular foi analisado após lise celular, absorvendo compostos a 260 nm; também foi avaliada a ligação do óleo essencial com ergosterol. O óleo essencial de C. winterianus inibiu a formação de pseudohifas e clamidoconídeos em todas as concentrações testadas, causando a lise celular e a concentração inibitória mínima do óleo na presença de ergosterol aumentada até oito vezes, indicando ligação ao ergosterol.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN Las Candida spp. son patógenos oportunistas y comensales presentes en prácticamente todos los seres humanos. La Candida albicans está considerada patógeno para el hombre, habiéndose vuelto resistente a los antifúngicos, por eso es importante en la búsqueda de nuevos antifúngicos. El estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar el mecanismo de acción del aceite esencial de Cymbopogon winterianus contra la C. albicans. Se observaron alteraciones morfológicas en C. albicans cuando expuesta a varias concentraciones del aceite por la técnica de microcultivo para levaduras, utilizando agar-arroz en cámara húmeda. El vaciamiento celular se analizó luego de la lisis celular, absorbiendo compuestos a 260 nm; también se evaluó la conexión del aceite esencial con el ergosterol. El aceite esencial de C. winterianus inhibió la formación de pseudohifas y clamidoconidios en todas las concentraciones probadas, causando la lisis celular y la concentración inhibidora mínima del aceite en presencia de ergosterol aumentada en hasta ocho veces, indicando ligación con el ergosterol.]]></p></abstract>
