MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foram coletadas amostras de soro dos pacientes, além de informações socioeconômicas e ambientais via aplicação de formulário. As amostras de soro dos pacientes foram submetidas à pesquisa de anticorpos IgM e IgG, por meio de ensaio imunoenzimático (ELISA) indireto e reação de imunofluorescência indireta (RIFI).  RESULTADOS: Das 521 amostras coletadas, a frequência de soropositivos para T. gondii foi de 68,7%. Em 51%, foram evidenciados somente anticorpos IgG e, em 17,7%, anticorpos IgG/IgM, perfil compatível com infecção aguda. Concordância quase perfeita entre ELISA e RIFI foi verificada na pesquisa de IgG (Kappa = 0,84). Na análise univariada, as variáveis significativamente associadas à positividade para T. gondii foram: faixa etária, consumo de folhas e hortaliças, resultado prévio positivo, ocorrência de aborto e presença de gato no domicílio. Já pela regressão logística, identificou-se que maior faixa etária, presença de gatos como animais de estimação e menor faixa de renda foram fatores que apresentaram maior risco à infecção por T. gondii.  CONCLUSÃO: Foi evidenciada a elevada frequência de pacientes soropositivos para T. gondii atendidos no Laboratório Municipal de Oriximiná, bem como a falta de concordância em 100% entre RIFI e ELISA, demonstrando-se a necessidade de se utilizar mais de uma técnica laboratorial para a detecção de anticorpos anti-T. gondii.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  OBJECTIVES:  Evaluate the frequency of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies and the risk factors inherent to infection with this parasite and to compare serological diagnostic techniques in patients treated at the Municipal Laboratory of Oriximiná, Pará State, Brazil.  MATERIALS AND METHODS:  Serum samples were collected from patients, as well as socioeconomic and environmental data by form application. These samples were tested for IgM and IgG antibodies by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT).  RESULTS:  A total of 521 samples were collected. The frequency of seropositive individuals with T. gondii was 68.7%. In 51%, only IgG antibodies were found, while in 17.7% IgG/IgM antibodies were detected, a profile compatible with acute infection. Almost perfect agreement between ELISA and IFAT tests was found regarding the IgG (Kappa = 0.84). In univariate analysis, the variables significantly associated with positivity for T. gondii were: age group, consumption of greens and vegetables, previous positive result, abortion, and presence of cat in the house. As for the logistic regression, it was identified that a higher age group, the presence of cats as pets, and a lower income range were factors that presented a higher risk of infection by T. gondii.  CONCLUSION:  The high frequency of T. gondii seropositive patients seen at the Municipal Laboratory of Oriximiná was evidenced, as well as a lack of perfect agreement between IFAT and ELISA, demonstrating the need to use more than one laboratory technique for the detection of anti-T. gondii antibodies.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN  OBJETIVOS: Evaluar la frecuencia de anticuerpos anti-Toxoplasma gondii y los factores de riesgo inherentes a la infección por este parásito; y comparar las técnicas de diagnóstico serológico en pacientes tratados en el Laboratorio Municipal de Oriximiná, Estado de Pará, Brasil.  MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: Se recogieron muestras de suero de los pacientes, así como información socioeconómica y ambiental a través de la aplicación del formulario. Las muestras de suero de los pacientes se sometieron a la investigación de anticuerpos IgM e IgG mediante ensayo inmunoenzimático indirecto (ELISA) y reacción de inmunofluorescencia indirecta (RIFI).  RESULTADOS: De las 521 muestras recogidas, la frecuencia de seropositivo para T. gondii fue del 68,7%. En 51%, solo se evidenciaron anticuerpos IgG y en 17,7%, anticuerpos IgG/IgM, un perfil compatible con infección aguda. En el estudio IgG se verificó una concordancia casi perfecta entre ELISA e RIFI (Kappa = 0,84). En el análisis univariado, las variables significativamente asociadas con la positividad para T. gondii fueron: grupo de edad, consumo de hojas y verduras, resultado previo positivo, ocurrencia de aborto y presencia de gato en el hogar. Regresión logística, se identificó que mayor edad, presencia de gatos como mascotas y menor rango de ingresos fueron factores que presentaron mayor riesgo de infección por T. gondii.  CONCLUSIÓN: Se evidenció la alta frecuencia de pacientes seropositivos para T. gondii tratados en el Laboratorio Municipal de Oriximiná, bien como la falta de concordancia en 100% entre RIFI y ELISA, demostrando la necesidad de utilizar más de una técnica de laboratorio para la detección de anticuerpos anti-T. gondii.]]></p></abstract>
