MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen swabs from cutaneous or mucosal lesions were used to inoculate Vero cells for viral propagation. The species of the isolates were identified by amplifying and sequencing a portion of the conserved region of the herpesvirus DNA polymerase gene. ACV susceptibility was determined using dose-response assays.  RESULTS: HHV strains were isolated from all 15 samples. Ten isolates belonged to species HHV-1 and five to species HHV-2. Susceptibility assays showed that 13 isolates were sensitive to ACV, one had intermediate resistance, and one was resistant.  CONCLUSION: The results presented in this study demonstrate the circulation of HHV-1 and HHV-2 in healthy individuals in Rio de Janeiro, including ACV-resistant strains, and highlight the need for continued surveillance in the face of the emergence of HHV strains resistant to antiviral drugs used in the treatment of these infections.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[RESUMO  OBJETIVOS: Isolar e identificar cepas de herpesvírus humano (HHV) circulantes em indivíduos saudáveis no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, e caracterizar sua suscetibilidade ao aciclovir (ACV).  MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Quinze swabs de lesões cutâneas ou mucosas foram utilizados para inocular células Vero para propagação viral. As espécies dos isolados foram identificadas pela amplificação e sequenciamento de uma porção da região conservada do gene da DNA polimerase do herpesvírus. A suscetibilidade ao ACV foi determinada usando ensaios de dose-resposta.  RESULTADOS: Cepas de HHV foram isoladas de todas as 15 amostras. Dez isolados pertenciam à espécie HHV-1 e cinco, à espécie HHV-2. Os ensaios de suscetibilidade mostraram que 13 isolados foram sensíveis ao ACV, um apresentou resistência intermediária e um foi resistente.  CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados apresentados neste estudo demonstram a circulação do HHV-1 e HHV-2 em indivíduos saudáveis no Rio de Janeiro, incluindo cepas resistentes ao ACV, e destacam a necessidade de vigilância contínua diante do surgimento de cepas resistentes do HHV aos medicamentos antivirais usados no tratamento dessas infecções.]]></p></abstract>
