MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 469 subjects in two communities around the Chapada das Mesas National Park. Qualitative and quantitative parasitological examinations were performed, and socio-ecological data were assessed. A geographic information system was used for spatial analysis.  RESULTS: The prevalence of hookworm infection was 20.6% in Canto Grande and 2.4% in Alto Bonito. The ascariasis prevalence in Canto Grande and Alto Bonito was 0.4% and 2.9%, respectively. Infections with gut protozoa were more frequent in Alto Bonito. Hookworm infection was associated with the male sex, open defecation, clay floors in homes, and lower monthly family income. Ascariasis was associated with open defecation. Ingestion of water directly from a river was associated with Giardia duodenalis infection. A total of 86.0% of the hookworm-positive subjects had light infection intensity, 4.0% moderate, and 10.0% heavy. Geoprocessing demonstrated that soil-transmitted helminths hotspots were in Canto Grande, while protozoa were concentrated in Alto Bonito.  CONCLUSION: The present study suggests that intestinal parasitism should be considered a heterogeneous group of infections with distinct determinants in the studied communities. Intestinal parasitism persists, revealing the inadequacy of sanitation in traditional communities around the Chapada das Mesas National Park.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[RESUMO  OBJETIVOS: Estimar a prevalência e descrever os fatores socioecológicos associados ao parasitismo intestinal em comunidades rurais e periurbanas ao redor de uma área de proteção ambiental no estado do Maranhão, Brasil.  MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal, realizado com 469 indivíduos de duas comunidades do entorno do Parque Nacional da Chapada das Mesas. Exames parasitológicos qualitativos e quantitativos foram realizados, e dados socioecológicos foram avaliados. Um sistema de informações geográficas foi utilizado para a análise espacial.  RESULTADOS: A prevalência de ancilostomíase foi de 20,6% em Canto Grande e 2,4% em Alto Bonito. A prevalência de ascaridíase em Canto Grande e Alto Bonito foi de 0,4% e 2,9%, respectivamente. Infecções por protozoários intestinais foram mais frequentes em Alto Bonito. A ancilostomíase foi associada ao sexo masculino, defecação a céu aberto, pisos de barro nas casas e menor renda familiar mensal. A ascaridíase foi associada à defecação a céu aberto. A ingestão de água diretamente de um rio foi associada à infecção por Giardia duodenalis. Um total de 86,0% dos indivíduos positivos para ancilostomídeos apresentaram intensidade de infecção leve, 4,0% moderada e 10,0% intensa. O geoprocessamento demonstrou que os hotspots de helmintos transmitidos pelo solo estavam em Canto Grande, enquanto os protozoários estavam concentrados em Alto Bonito.  CONCLUSÃO: O parasitismo intestinal deve ser considerado um grupo heterogêneo de infecções com determinantes distintos nas localidades estudadas. Sua persistência revela a inadequação do saneamento nas comunidades tradicionais do entorno do Parque Nacional da Chapada das Mesas.]]></p></abstract>
