Em 2021, foram registrados 1.389 casos de síndrome respiratória aguda grave causados por influenza no Brasil, sendo que 162 foram a óbitos e, destes, 12 eram de residentes do estado do Amazonas.  OBJETIVO: Identificar os fatores de risco para óbito por influenza A/H1N1 no Amazonas, no ano epidêmico de 2019.  MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Um estudo de coorte prospectivo foi realizado com dados secundários da vigilância epidemiológica do Amazonas, utilizando o modelo de regressão logística para analisar a associação entre os fatores sociodemográficos e clínicos com o óbito por influenza.  RESULTADOS: Em 2019, foram registradas 161 hospitalizações de indivíduos acometidos por influenza A no Amazonas, dos quais 37 (23,0%) evoluíram para óbito. A maioria dos pacientes tinham idade entre 13 e 59 anos e eram do sexo feminino. Pacientes com idade de 13 a 59 anos e de 60 anos ou mais e os que apresentavam pneumopatia apresentaram maior risco de óbito, enquanto o uso do antiviral foi fator de proteção.  CONCLUSÃO: A redução da mortalidade por influenza é possível por meio de políticas públicas já implementadas, como a disponibilidade e administração oportuna de antivirais. Ressalta-se ainda a relevância das comorbidades como fatores de risco para o óbito em pacientes hospitalizados por influenza.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  INTRODUCTION: Seasonal influenza is estimated to cause approximately 3 to 5 million severe cases and 290,000 to 650,000 deaths worldwide due to related respiratory complications. In 2021, Brazil reported 1,389 cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome caused by influenza, resulting in 162 deaths, 12 of which occurred in Amazonas State.  OBJECTIVE: To identify the risk factors for death from influenza A/H1N1 in Amazonas during the 2019 epidemic.  MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted using secondary data from epidemiological surveillance in Amazonas State. A logistic regression model was employed to analyze the association between sociodemographic and clinical factors and influenza-related mortality.  RESULTS: In 2019, 161 hospitalizations due to influenza A were recorded in Amazonas, with 37 (23.0%) resulting in death. Most patients were aged 13 to 59 years and were female. Patients aged 13 to 59 years, those aged 60 or older, and those with pneumopathy were at higher risk of death. The use of antiviral medication was a protective factor.  CONCLUSION: Reducing influenza mortality is possible through existing public policies, such as the timely availability and administration of antivirals. Comorbidities are significant risk factors for death in patients hospitalized with influenza.]]></p></abstract>
