MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: As coletas dos moluscos ocorreram na barragem de Boa Esperança, situada no município de Guadalupe (área I), e no Complexo Lagoas do Norte (área II), em Teresina. As coletas biológicas ocorreram de forma direta, por meio de conchas de captura e/ou pinças. Os exemplares foram triados e encaminhados ao Laboratório de Helmintologia e Malacologia Médica do Instituto René Rachou, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, referência nacional para esquistossomose, para identificação morfológica e molecular, seguida de exame para verificar a presença de Schistosoma mansoni.  RESULTADOS: Foram pesquisados 15 pontos de coletas, sendo: 12 na área I, que revelou a ocorrência de oito exemplares de Biomphalaria straminea e quatro de B. kuhniana; e três pontos na área II, de onde foram obtidos um exemplar de B. straminea e 40 de B. kuhniana. Nenhum molusco esteve parasitado por cercárias de S. mansoni.  CONCLUSÃO: Este primeiro registro de B. kuhniana no Piauí agrega conhecimentos acerca da biodiversidade de moluscos Biomphalaria na região e enfatiza a importância da utilização de técnicas moleculares para a separação de B. straminea e B. kuhniana. A ocorrência de B. straminea revela a necessidade de novas investigações sobre a presença de focos de transmissão de esquistossomose mansônica no estado do Piauí, uma vez que a espécie é o principal hospedeiro de S. mansoni no Nordeste brasileiro.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  OBJECTIVE: To present the first record of Biomphalaria kuhniana in Piauí State, Brazil.  MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mollusk collection took place at the Boa Esperança dam, located in Guadalupe City (area I), and the Lagoas do Norte Complex (area II), in Teresina. Specimens were collected directly using sieves and/or tweezers. The samples were sorted and sent to the Laboratory of Helminthology and Medical Malacology at the Instituto René Rachou, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, a national reference for schistosomiasis, for morphological and molecular identification, followed by Schistosoma mansoni cercaria exam.  RESULTS: The study included 15 collection points, 12 in area I, yielding eight specimens of Biomphalaria straminea and four of B. kuhniana, and three points in area II, with one specimen of B. straminea and 40 of B. kuhniana. All mollusks were negative for S. mansoni cercariae.  CONCLUSION: This first report of B. kuhniana in Piauí contributes to the understanding of Biomphalaria mollusk biodiversity in the region and highlights the importance of molecular techniques for distinguishing B. straminea from B. kuhniana. The occurrence of B. straminea indicates the need for further research into potential transmission foci of schistosomiasis mansoni in Piauí, as this species is the primary host of S. mansoni in Northeastern Brazil.]]></p></abstract>
