As coletas foram efetuadas um dia por mês, entre agosto de 2000 e dezembro de 2006, com armadilhas do tipo CDC. Foram capturados 4.277 espécimes, pertencentes a 14 espécies de flebotomíneos (76,61% no peridomicílio), sendo 3.071 machos e 1.206 fêmeas. Lutzomyia longipalpis, a espécie mais frequente (87,02%), teve índice de constância estandardizado igual a 1,0. Os padrões temporo-espaciais de distribuição dessa espécie ratificaram seu importante papel na transmissão da leishmaniose visceral americana. Infecção por flagelados sugestivos de Leishmania spp. foi encontrada em 1,18% das fêmeas dissecadas de Lu. longipalpis. Análises estatísticas mostraram correlação significativa (p < 0,05) entre o número de vetores, precipitação e umidade. O teste de regressão linear demonstrou associação significante entre o número de Lu. longipalpis capturados e os casos de leishmaniose visceral americana humana e canina (p < 0,001). A população de vetores foi reduzida em 2002, com a aplicação de inseticidas, mas elevou-se nos anos subsequentes, devido à irregularidade das borrifações. Estratégias que poderão ser utilizadas no controle da doença nessa área são sugeridas na conclusão.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[The objectives of this study were to survey urban and rural sandfly species; to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution of sandflies in the studied area; to determine the levels of natural infection of female sandflies with Leishmania; to determine the impact of the application of insecticides on the vector population; to correlate entomological, epidemiological, and biogeographic data to identify conditions that are favorable to the occurrence of leishmaniasis; and to provide information for the control of leishmaniasis in the studied area. Specimen collection was carried out once a month between August 2000 and December 2006, using CDC traps. In total, 4,277 specimens were captured (3,071 males and 1,206 females), comprising 14 sandfly species. Of these specimens, 76.61% were found in peridomestic areas. Lutzomyia longipalpis, the most frequent species (87.02%), had a standardized constancy index of 1.0. The spatiotemporal distribution pattern of this species confirmed its important role in the transmission of American visceral leishmaniasis. Infection by flagellates suggestive of Leishmania spp. was found in 1.18% of dissected Lu. longipalpis females. Statistical analyses showed a significant correlation (p < 0.05) between the number of sandflies and the precipitation and humidity levels. Linear regression tests showed a significant association between the number of Lu. longipalpis captured and the cases of human and canine American visceral leishmaniasis in a given area (p < 0.001). The vector population was reduced in 2002 by the application of insecticides; however, it increased in subsequent years due to the irregularity of spraying. Las colectas se realizaron un día por mes, entre agosto de 2000 y diciembre de 2006, con trampas tipo CDC. Fueron capturados 4.277 especímenes, pertenecientes a 14 especies de flebótomos (76,61% en peridomicilio), siendo 3.071 machos y 1.206 hembras. Lutzomyia longipalpis, la especie más frecuente (87,02%), tuvo un índice de constancia estándar igual a 1,0. Los estándares temporo-espaciales de distribución de esa especie ratificaron su importante papel en la transmisión de la leishmaniasis visceral americana. <body><![CDATA[<p><font size="3" face="Verdana"><b>INTRODU&Ccedil;&Atilde;O</b></font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Os flebotom&iacute;neos (Diptera: Psychodidae:     Phlebotominae) s&atilde;o considerados   importantes para a sa&uacute;de p&uacute;blica em todo o mundo, especialmente   nas regi&otilde;es tropicais e subtropicais. As esp&eacute;cies do g&ecirc;nero <i>Phlebotomus </i>encontradas   no Velho Mundo, e as do g&ecirc;nero <i>Lutzomyia, </i>nas Am&eacute;ricas,   s&atilde;o consideradas vetores de in&uacute;meros pat&oacute;genos de vertebrados,   inclusive <i>Leishmania </i>spp. zoon&oacute;tica ou antropozoon&oacute;tica,   a qual afeta as popula&ccedil;&otilde;es de aproximadamente 90 pa&iacute;ses,   sendo considerada uma das seis doen&ccedil;as tropicais mais importantes em   todo o mundo<sup>1</sup>. Diversos estudos t&ecirc;m incriminado os flebotom&iacute;neos   como hospedeiros e transmissores de in&uacute;meros outros micro-organismos<sup>2,3,4,5</sup>.   Cabe lembrar que a picada destes insetos pode causar irrita&ccedil;&atilde;o   consider&aacute;vel e rea&ccedil;&otilde;es al&eacute;rgicas em pessoas sens&iacute;veis<sup>6</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Nas Am&eacute;ricas, a leishmaniose visceral,     forma mais grave da doen&ccedil;a   e que pode ser fatal se n&atilde;o tratada adequadamente, &eacute; end&ecirc;mica   em v&aacute;rios pa&iacute;ses e denominada leishmaniose visceral americana   (LVA). O agente&nbsp; etiol&oacute;gico &eacute;&nbsp; <i>Leishmania&nbsp;  (Leishmania)     chagasi &nbsp;</i>(Cunha  &amp; Chagas, 1937), seus hospedeiros naturais     s&atilde;o   can&iacute;deos silvestres (raposas) e, possivelmente, roedores e marsupiais;   nos ambientes domiciliares e peridomiciliares das &aacute;reas urbanas e rurais   s&atilde;o os c&atilde;es<sup>7,8,9</sup>. No Brasil, a transmiss&atilde;o   tem sido atribu&iacute;da,   principalmente, a <i>Lutzomyia longipalpis </i>(Lutz &amp; Neiva, 1912)<sup>7,8</sup>,   por&eacute;m outras esp&eacute;cies de flebotom&iacute;neos s&atilde; o consideradas   potenciais transmissoras da doen&ccedil;a<sup>10</sup>. No   Par&aacute;, <i>Lutzomyia     antunesi </i>(Coutinho, 1939) pode ser um vetor alternativo da LVA<sup>8</sup>. Em Mato   Grosso do Sul, na regi&atilde;o de Corumb&aacute; e Lad&aacute;rio, <i>Lutzomyia     cruzi </i>(Mangabeira, 1938) &eacute; a esp&eacute;cie predominante e simp&aacute;trica   a <i>Lutzomyia forattinii </i>(Galati, Rego, Nunes &amp; Teruya, 1985); ambas   tem sido consideradas transmissoras do agente da leishmaniose visceral<sup>11</sup>.   Outra esp&eacute;cie da fauna flebotom&iacute;nica da Serra da Bodoquena, <i>Lutzomyia     almerioi </i>(Galati &amp; Nunes, 1999), apresentou infec&ccedil;&atilde;o   natural por <i>L. (L.) chagasi </i>e <i>Leishmania (Viannia) </i>sp., alta   densidade e acentuado antropofilismo, sugestivos da possibilidade de envolvimento   na transmiss&atilde;o da doen&ccedil;a nessa regi&atilde;o<sup>12,13,14,15,16,17</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Apesar dos avan&ccedil;os obtidos nas  &uacute;ltimas d&eacute;cadas no mapeamento   da distribui&ccedil;&atilde;o geogr&aacute;fica das doen&ccedil;as transmitidas   por vetores, com o uso de sensoriamento remoto por sat&eacute;lite, de sistema   de posicionamento global por sat&eacute;lite (GPS) e de sistemas de informa&ccedil;&otilde;es   georreferenciadas<sup>18,19,20,21</sup>, a ocorr&ecirc;ncia e expans&atilde;o dos vetores   da LVA n&atilde;o t&ecirc;m sido sistematicamente monitoradas e documentadas.   A presente investiga&ccedil;&atilde;o teve como objetivo principal conhecer   aspectos da ecoepidemiologia da fauna flebotom&iacute;nica em Tr&ecirc;s Lagoas,   Estado de Mato Grosso&nbsp; do Sul,&nbsp; contribuindo&nbsp;  com&nbsp; a&nbsp; melhoria&nbsp;  dos   conhecimentos sobre a ocorr&ecirc;ncia da LVA nesta localidade, e fornecer   informa&ccedil;&otilde;es para a vigil&acirc;ncia epidemiol&oacute;gica e controle   do vetor e da doen&ccedil;a.</font></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font size="3" face="Verdana">  <b>MATERIAIS E M&Eacute;TODOS</b></font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"><b>&Aacute;REA DE ESTUDO</b></font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> O Munic&iacute;pio de Tr&ecirc;s Lagoas (52<sup>o</sup> 33'     44'' W, 19<sup>o</sup> 36' 56''   S) situa-se no extremo leste do Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, Regi&atilde;o   Centro-Oeste do Brasil (<a href="#f1">Figura 1</a>). A altitude m&eacute;dia no n&uacute;cleo   urbano &eacute; de 319 m acima do n&iacute;vel do mar. Possui clima tropical   quente e &uacute;mido, precipita&ccedil;&atilde;o m&eacute;dia anual de 1.500   mm e duas esta&ccedil;&otilde;es bem definidas: ver&atilde;o chuvoso e inverno   seco<sup>22</sup>. O trimestre de maior precipita&ccedil;&atilde;o compreende o per&iacute;odo   de novembro a janeiro. As temperaturas m&eacute;dias mensais variam entre 29,3<sup>o</sup> C   no ver&atilde;o e 18,1<sup>o</sup> C no inverno<sup>23</sup>. Seu territ&oacute;rio   localiza-se na bacia do rio Paran&aacute; e apresenta biomas naturais importantes,   como o cerrado (vegeta&ccedil;&atilde;o predominante) e faixas de mata ciliar,   que se alternam perpendicularmente &agrave;s margens do rio Paran&aacute; e   do reservat&oacute;rio da Usina Hidrel&eacute;trica de Jupi&aacute;; as paisagens   s&atilde;o diferenciadas, com ampla diversidade de esp&eacute;cies da flora   e fauna. A sua &aacute;rea territorial &eacute; 10.206 km<sup>2</sup> (2,85% da &aacute;rea   total do Estado) e a popula&ccedil;&atilde;o &eacute; de 85.914 habitantes   (densidade populacional de 8,4 hab/km<sup>2</sup>), 94% dos quais residem   na &aacute;rea   urbana. A economia &eacute; baseada principalmente na pecu&aacute;ria, complementada   pelo extrativismo vegetal e turismo; passa, atualmente, por um acelerado processo   de industrializa&ccedil;&atilde;o, em vias de se tornar um importante polo   industrial no Estado<sup>22</sup>.</font></p>     <p><a name="f1"></a></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="center"><img src="/img/revistas/rpas/v1n3/3a12f1.gif" border="0"></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"><b>CAPTURA E IDENTIFICA&Ccedil;&Atilde;O DOS FLEBOTOM&Iacute;NEOS</b></font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> O levantamento da fauna flebotom&iacute;nica     foi realizado entre agosto de 2000 e dezembro de 2006. Foram empregadas armadilhas     autom&aacute;ticas luminosas   do tipo CDC, instaladas em duplas, em peri e intradomic&iacute;lio, a 50&shy;70   cm acima do n&iacute;vel do solo, ao entardecer (18 h) e recolhidas ao amanhecer   (6 h), uma vez por m&ecirc;s, em locais previamente selecionados<sup>24</sup>.   O crit&eacute;rio   de sele&ccedil;&atilde;o dos locais de captura foi baseado na ocorr&ecirc;ncia   de casos humanos e/ou caninos de LVA. Foram escolhidas, por sorteio, duas resid&ecirc;ncias   nas proximidades (aproximadamente 200 m) dos locais com registro da doen&ccedil;a,   e onde as condi&ccedil;&otilde;es ambientais fossem favor&aacute;veis aos criadouros   dos vetores. No extradomic&iacute;lio foram escolhidas &aacute;reas de silvicultura   e cerrado prop&iacute;cias &agrave; prolifera&ccedil;&atilde;o de flebotom&iacute;neos.   Os esp&eacute;cimes coletados em cada m&ecirc;s eram agrupados e considerados   representativos do m&ecirc;s correspondente.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Ap&oacute;s a captura, os fleb&oacute;tomos     foram entorpecidos com &eacute;ter   e separadas, aleatoriamente, cinco f&ecirc;meas, por data de coleta, para pesquisa   de formas evolutivas de <i>Leishmania. </i>Os demais esp&eacute;cimes foram   acondicionados em frascos de vidro com tampa pl&aacute;stica contendo  &aacute;lcool   70%, etiquetados com o nome, c&oacute;digo da &aacute;rea e data de coleta   e enviados ao laborat&oacute;rio do Centro de Controle de Zoonoses (CCZ) da   Secretaria Municipal de Sa&uacute;de (SMS) de Tr&ecirc;s Lagoas. Em seguida,   efetuaram-se os processos de clarifica&ccedil;&atilde;o, montagem e identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o   dos flebotom&iacute;neos, usando-se, para esta  &uacute;ltima, a nomenclatura   de Young e Duncan<sup>25</sup> posteriormente adaptada &agrave; proposta por Galati<sup>26</sup>.   Adotou-se o sistema de abreviaturas para g&ecirc;nero e subg&ecirc;nero proposto   por Marcondes<sup>27</sup>. O material-testemunha foi encaminhado ao Laborat&oacute;rio   Regional de Entomologia de Dourados/Secretaria de Estado da Sa&uacute;de de   Mato Grosso do Sul (SES/MS) para confirma&ccedil;&atilde;o dos dados e dep&oacute;sito.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> A presen&ccedil;a de flagelados foi investigada     por meio de disseca&ccedil;&atilde;o   de f&ecirc;meas capturadas, em solu&ccedil;&atilde;o salina a 0,85% e anticontaminantes<sup>24</sup>   e o intestino observado ao microsc&oacute;pio de contraste de fase (400x);   posteriormente, o material corado com Giemsa era novamente observado. O n&uacute;mero,   o sexo e as esp&eacute;cies de flebotom&iacute;neos capturados foram registrados   em tabelas mensais pelo CCZ/SMS de Tr&ecirc;s Lagoas.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> <b>DADOS CLIM&Aacute;TICOS</b></font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Os dados clim&aacute;ticos para o per&iacute;odo     de estudos (temperatura e precipita&ccedil;&atilde;o m&eacute;dias mensais,     umidade relativa do ar e velocidade dos ventos) foram obtidos junto ao Instituto     Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET)<sup>23</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> <b>AN&Aacute;LISE ESTAT&Iacute;STICA</b></font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Para a an&aacute;lise da abund&acirc;ncia relativa     (%) de esp&eacute;cies,   foram utilizados os dados das capturas efetuadas entre agosto de 2000 e dezembro   de 2006. A diversidade de esp&eacute;cies encontrada no Munic&iacute;pio foi   calculada por meio da utiliza&ccedil;&atilde;o do &iacute;ndice de Fisher-Willians<sup>28,29</sup>.   A raz&atilde;o sexual (machos: f&ecirc;meas) no intra e no peridomic&iacute;lio   foi comparada utilizando-se o teste do Qui-Quadrado. A correla&ccedil;&atilde;o   n&atilde;o param&eacute;trica de Spearman foi aplicada entre o n&uacute;mero   de esp&eacute;cimes encontrados, as precipita&ccedil;&otilde;es m&eacute;dias   mensais e temperaturas m&eacute;dias compensadas mensais, medidas ao longo   do per&iacute;odo de estudo. Para testar a propor&ccedil;&atilde;o entre indiv&iacute;duos   infectados por <i>Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi </i>e o n&uacute;mero de   flebotom&iacute;neos capturados, foi empregado um modelo linear simples para   realizar uma an&aacute;lise de regress&atilde;o log&iacute;stica. O &iacute;ndice   de const&acirc;ncia de <i>Lu. longipalpis </i>foi calculado por meio da f&oacute;rmula:   C = Px100/N, onde P representa o n&uacute;mero de coletas com a esp&eacute;cie   estudada e N o n&uacute;mero total de coletas realizadas<sup>28,29</sup>.   A distribui&ccedil;&atilde;o   mensal dos flebotom&iacute;neos capturados foi testada para normalidade por   meio do teste de Kolmogorov-Smirnov. Todas as an&aacute;lises foram realizadas   utilizando-se o programa BioEstat, v 5.0<sup>30</sup>.</font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font size="3" face="Verdana"><b>RESULTADOS</b></font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Dentre os pontos monitorados em Tr&ecirc;s Lagoas, 86,8% foram positivos para   flebotom&iacute;neos.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> De agosto de 2000 a dezembro de 2006, foi coletado     um total de 4.277 esp&eacute;cimes:   3.071 machos (71,81%) e 1.206 f&ecirc;meas (28,19%) pertencentes a quatro subtribos,   sete g&ecirc;neros e 14 esp&eacute;cies. As duas esp&eacute;cies pertencentes &agrave; subtribo   Brumptoyiina foram <i>Brumptomyia avellari </i>(Costa Lima, 1932) e <i>Brumptomyia     brumpti </i>(Larrousse, 1920); da subtribo Lutzomyiina, <i>Lutzomyia longipalpis </i>(Lutz &amp; Neiva,   1912); da subtribo Psychodopygina, <i>Bichromomyia flaviscutellata </i>(Mangabeira,   1942), <i>Nyssomyia whitmani </i>(Antunes &amp; Coutinho, 1939), <i>Nyssomyia     intermedia </i>(Lutz  &amp; Neiva, 1912), <i>Psathyromyia punctigeniculata </i>(Floch &amp; Abonnenc,   1944), <i>Psathyromyia campograndensis </i>(Oliveira, Andrade-Filho, Falc&atilde;o  &amp; Brazil), <i>Psathyromyia     lutziana </i>(Costa Lima, 1932) e da subtribo Sergentomyiina, <i>Micropygomyia       peresi </i>(Mangabeira, 1942), <i>Evandromyia evandroi </i>(Costa Lima &amp; Antunes,   1936), <i>Evandromyia termitophila </i>(Martins, Falc&atilde;o &amp; Silva,   1964), <i>Evandromyia carmelinoi </i>(Ryan, Fraiha, Lainson  &amp; Shaw, 1986), <i>Evandromyia   lenti </i>(Mangabeira, 1938) (<a href="#f2">Figura 2</a> e <a href="#t1">Tabela   1</a>).</font></p>     <p><a name="f2"></a></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p align="center"><img src="/img/revistas/rpas/v1n3/3a12f2.gif" border="0"></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><a name="t1"></a></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="center"><img src="/img/revistas/rpas/v1n3/3a12t1.gif" border="0"></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> A raz&atilde;o M/F capturados foi de 2,5 e     variou de acordo com cada esp&eacute;cie   de fleb&oacute;tomo (<a href="#t1">Tabela 1</a>); o n&uacute;mero de machos   de <i>Lutzomyia longipalpis </i>foi   cerca de tr&ecirc;s vezes superior ao das f&ecirc;meas. O &iacute;ndice de   diversidade de esp&eacute;cies (Fisher-Willians) foi de 1,56. De acordo com   o teste de Kolmogorov-Smirnov, houve uma distribui&ccedil;&atilde;o normal   da densidade populacional dos flebotom&iacute;neos durante o per&iacute;odo   de investiga&ccedil;&atilde;o (p &lt; 0,01), com uma m&eacute;dia mensal de   59 &#177; 19. Excepcionalmente, nos meses de mar&ccedil;o de 2002, abril,   maio, agosto e outubro de 2005 e mar&ccedil;o de 2006, um n&uacute;mero relativamente   elevado de vetores foi capturado. Nesses meses foram registrados baixos n&iacute;veis   de precipita&ccedil;&atilde;o, por&eacute;m os &iacute;ndices pluviom&eacute;tricos   mais elevados nos meses precedentes, umidade relativa acima de 70%, temperaturas   entre 22 e 28,5<sup>o</sup> C e baixa velocidade dos ventos, que podem ter   favorecido esse aumento populacional.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Do total de flebotom&iacute;neos, 88,44% foram coletados em peri e intradomic&iacute;lio,   em ambientes profundamente alterados pela atividade antr&oacute;pica, e 11,56%   em &aacute;reas rurais. A esp&eacute;cie mais abundante foi <i>Lutzomyia longipalpis </i>e   correspondeu a 87,02% dos esp&eacute;cimes capturados (<a href="#t1">Tabela   1</a>), com 3.459   exemplares (92,93%) no intra e no peridomic&iacute;lio e 263 (7,06%) no extradomic&iacute;lio   (&aacute;reas remanescentes de cerrado e hortos florestais); o &iacute;ndice   de const&acirc;ncia foi C = 1 e a esp&eacute;cie esteve presente em todos os   bairros e meses de coletas.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Em rela&ccedil;&atilde;o ao comportamento das     esp&eacute;cies (endo e exofilia),   2.898 exemplares (76,61%) foram capturados no peridomic&iacute;lio, sendo 2.087   machos (72,02%) e 811   f&ecirc;meas (27,98%); 885 (23,39%) no intradomic&iacute;lio: machos   689 (77,85 %) e 196 f&ecirc;meas (22,15%). Esses dados mostraram que   os flebotom&iacute;neos foram mais abundantes na  &aacute;rea peridom&eacute;stica   e que a predomin&acirc;ncia dos machos em todos os ambientes pesquisados foi   estatisticamente significante (&#967;<sup>2</sup> = 16,632; p = 0,0002). As   esp&eacute;cies   mais frequentes no ambiente intra e peridomiciliar foram, em ordem decrescente, <i>Lu.   longipalpis, Ev. evandroi </i>e <i>Mi. peresi.</i></font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Na &aacute;rea urbana de Tr&ecirc;s Lagoas,     foram capturados flebotom&iacute;neos   em todos os bairros pesquisados (<a href="#f2">Figura 2</a>); em 87,71% destes, foram registrados   8.437 casos caninos acumulados de leishmaniose visceral (m&eacute;dia de 1.205,3   casos/ano) e 284 casos humanos notificados em 64,21% dessas localidades. No   per&iacute;odo estudado, a m&eacute;dia anual foi 40,6 casos de LVA humana   e houve um total de 27 &oacute;bitos (taxa de letalidade/ano = 9,50%), sendo   o Munic&iacute;pio classificado como &quot;de transmiss&atilde;o intensa&quot; (m&eacute;dia   de casos humanos n &#8805;4,4) pelo Minist&eacute;rio da Sa&uacute;de do Brasil<sup>15</sup>.   As localidades consideradas de transmiss&atilde;o intensa de LVA e onde a abund&acirc;ncia   relativa de <i>Lu. longipalpis </i>tamb&eacute;m foi mais elevada s&atilde;o   mostradas na <a href="#f3">figura 3</a>. O teste de regress&atilde;o linear resultou em associa&ccedil;&atilde;o   estatisticamente significante entre o n&uacute;mero de vetores, casos caninos   e humanos de LVA (p &lt; 0,05).</font></p>     <p><a name="f3"></a></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p align="center"><img src="/img/revistas/rpas/v1n3/3a12f3.gif" border="0"></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Um total de 928 f&ecirc;meas de <i>Lu. longipalpis </i>selecionadas     ao acaso, dentre as coletadas em peri, intra e extradomic&iacute;lio, foram dissecadas   e em apenas 11 (1,18%) encontrou-se positividade para flagelados. As l&acirc;minas   coradas com Giemsa mostraram a presen&ccedil;a de formas flageladas sugestivas   de <i>Leishmania </i>spp.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> A sazonalidade dos flebotom&iacute;neos ao longo do per&iacute;odo de estudo   est&aacute; representada nas <a href="#f4">figuras 4</a>, <a href="#f5">5</a> e <a href="#f6">6</a>, nas quais foram plotados: o   n&uacute;mero total de esp&eacute;cimes coletados mensalmente em todos os pontos   de captura, a precipita&ccedil;&atilde;o total mensal e a temperatura m&eacute;dia   compensada mensal em Tr&ecirc;s Lagoas. O teste de correla&ccedil;&atilde;o   de Spearman evidenciou correla&ccedil;&atilde;o estatisticamente significante   (p &lt; 0,05) entre o n&uacute;mero de flebotom&iacute;neos capturados e as   taxas de precipita&ccedil;&atilde;o nos anos de 2000, 2003, 2004 e 2006 (p &lt; 0,05);   em rela&ccedil;&atilde;o &agrave;s temperaturas m&eacute;dias mensais, a correla&ccedil;&atilde;o   n&atilde;o foi estatisticamente significante (p &gt; 0,05) para os anos estudados,   exceto para 2006 (p = 0,0397; p &lt; 0,05).</font></p>     <p><a name="f4"></a></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p align="center"><img src="/img/revistas/rpas/v1n3/3a12f4.gif" border="0"></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><a name="f5"></a></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p align="center"><img src="/img/revistas/rpas/v1n3/3a12f5.gif" border="0"></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><a name="f6"></a></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p align="center"><img src="/img/revistas/rpas/v1n3/3a12f6.gif" border="0"></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font size="3" face="Verdana">  <b>DISCUSS&Atilde;O</b></font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> O presente estudo entomol&oacute;gico &eacute; a     primeira descri&ccedil;&atilde;o   da fauna flebotom&iacute;nica no Munic&iacute;pio de Tr&ecirc;s Lagoas, no   qual 14 esp&eacute;cies foram coletadas e identificadas. Os resultados obtidos   s&atilde;o semelhantes aos registrados em outras pesquisas sobre vetores de   leishmanioses realizadas em diversas regi&otilde;es brasileiras, nas quais <i>Lu.   longipalpis </i>foi a esp&eacute;cie mais      abundante<sup>31,32,33,34,35,36,37</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> O &iacute;ndice mais elevado de abund&acirc;ncia observado nessa investiga&ccedil;&atilde;o   foi a de <i>Lu. longipalpis </i>(1,0). Sua predomin&acirc;ncia no ambiente   dom&eacute;stico e peridom&eacute;stico na zona urbana (87,02%), especialmente   na regi&atilde;o central e bairros com maior preval&ecirc;ncia de casos humanos   e caninos de LVA, &eacute; um forte indicativo do comportamento antropof&iacute;lico   dessa esp&eacute;cie, evidencia seu importante papel na transmiss&atilde;o   local da leishmaniose visceral e os seus h&aacute;bitos alimentares ecl&eacute;ticos.   Isto pode levar  &agrave; ocorr&ecirc;ncia de surtos da doen&ccedil;a em c&atilde;es   e humanos e, por essa raz&atilde;o, esse vetor tem sido considerado o mais   importante da LVA na maior parte do Brasil<sup>34,35,36,37,38</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Alguns flebotom&iacute;neos de import&acirc;ncia     m&eacute;dica t&ecirc;m demonstrado   habilidade para adaptar-se e explorar ambientes alterados, contribuindo para   a endemicidade de <i>Leishmania </i>spp.399. No Munic&iacute;pio estudado,   pouco resta da vegeta&ccedil;&atilde;o original, que foi substitu&iacute;da   por pastagens, canaviais e hortos florestais. A &aacute;rea urbana foi quase   totalmente desmatada para constru&ccedil;&atilde;o de habita&ccedil;&otilde;es   e do parque industrial, estando no momento muito antropizada. Postula-se que   a predomin&acirc;ncia de algumas esp&eacute;cies em ambientes profundamente   alterados pela a&ccedil;&atilde;o humana seja um fator de alta magnitude para   transmiss&atilde;o da leishmaniose<sup>40</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Em Mato Grosso do Sul, <i>Lu. longipalpis </i>foi     coletado em 92,3% dos munic&iacute;pios   pesquisados com transmiss&atilde;o de LVA<sup>41</sup>. Por&eacute;m, pesquisas   realizadas nas cavernas e florestas da serra da Bodoquena; em Corumb&aacute; e   Lad&aacute;rio,   na regi&atilde;o do Pantanal sul-mato-grossense; e em Bonito, apontam <i>Lu.     cruzi </i>como a esp&eacute;cie mais abundante nessas &aacute;reas, dentre   os poss&iacute;veis vetores de leishmaniose visceral. Tais fatos poderiam ser   explicados por diferen&ccedil;as na cobertura vegetal, condi&ccedil;&otilde;es   clim&aacute;ticas e pelo grau de altera&ccedil;&otilde;es ambientais antr&oacute;picas   espec&iacute;ficas de cada localidade<sup>13,26,14,42,15,16,17</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana">  <i>Evandromyia evandroi, </i>a segunda esp&eacute;cie     mais numerosa na  &aacute;rea   estudada, habitualmente &eacute; encontrada nas mesmas &aacute;reas geogr&aacute;ficas   de ocorr&ecirc;ncia de <i>Lu. longipalpis; Mi. peresi </i>foi terceira dentre   as tr&ecirc;s mais frequentes. <i>E. evandroi </i>e <i>Mi. peresi </i>encontram-se   em franco processo de domicilia&ccedil;&atilde;o e n&atilde;o est&atilde;o   associadas &agrave; transmiss&atilde;o de leishmanias ao homem e aos animais. <i>Ny.     whitmani </i>e <i>Ny. intermedia </i>apresentaram frequencias menores, por&eacute;m   s&atilde;o incriminadas como vetores de <i>leishmanias </i>tendo sido capturadas   em peri e intradomic&iacute;lio. Isto pode ser um indicativo de alta antropofilia   e do grande potencial invasivo dessas esp&eacute;cies. A ocorr&ecirc;ncia simp&aacute;trica   de <i>Lu. longipalpis </i>e outras&nbsp;  esp&eacute;cies&nbsp; consideradas&nbsp; poss&iacute;veis&nbsp;  vetores&nbsp; de   leishmanioses tamb&eacute;m foi registrada em diversas localidades brasileiras   nos Estados de Minas Gerais, Esp&iacute;rito Santo, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso   do Sul, Maranh&atilde;o, Rio Grande do Norte, entre outros, por      in&uacute;meros pesquisadores<sup>31,32,33,34,35,43,15,40</sup>.</font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> A propor&ccedil;&atilde;o de machos foi mais     elevada em rela&ccedil;&atilde;o &agrave;s   f&ecirc;meas (2,7:1). Isto parece decorrer os seguintes fatos: os machos eclodem   antes das f&ecirc;meas; os criadouros s&atilde;o pr&oacute;ximos das moradias,   de condi&ccedil;&otilde;es prec&aacute;rias, com rachaduras que acumulam lodo   e fornecem abrigo durante o dia; a umidade do solo, que prolonga a vida aos   fleb&oacute;tomos; e a abundante presen&ccedil;a de animais dom&eacute;sticos   (principalmente c&atilde;es e aves) no peridomic&iacute;lio, que os atrairiam   pelo odor (cairom&ocirc;nios) ou libera&ccedil;&atilde;o de CO<sub>2</sub>. Os machos,   ent&atilde;o, liberariam ferom&ocirc;nios atraindo as f&ecirc;meas para a c&oacute;pula<sup>44,45,46</sup>.   Essas observa&ccedil;&otilde;es sugerem uma proximidade dos machos junto aos   hospedeiros por mais tempo do que as f&ecirc;meas e pode explicar a raz&atilde;o   sexual maior em favor dos machos nas coletas. Por outro lado, as f&ecirc;meas,   por seus h&aacute;bitos hemat&oacute;fagos, s&atilde;o os agentes transmissores   de <i>Leishmania </i>e sua estrat&eacute;gia reprodutiva consistiria em voar   para fora de seus abrigos e buscar um local para o repasto sangu&iacute;neo,   ocorrendo, ent&atilde;o, o acasalamento e a disputa por locais de criadouros<sup>7,8</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Em Tr&ecirc;s Lagoas, verificou-se que <i>Lu. longipalpis </i>esteve     presente, praticamente, em todos os meses durante o per&iacute;odo do estudo. Ao longo   do tempo, esta esp&eacute;cie apresentou um padr&atilde;o anual de abund&acirc;ncia   irregular, provavelmente pela intermit&ecirc;ncia das condi&ccedil;&otilde;es   clim&aacute;ticas, com picos de aumento populacional, seguindo com algum atraso   os per&iacute;odos chuvosos (at&eacute; mesmo pequenos volumes de precipita&ccedil;&atilde;o   no outono/inverno) e temperaturas entre 22 e 28<sup>o</sup> C na maior parte do ano.   Embora a temperatura pare&ccedil;a ser o fator clim&aacute;tico menos importante,   o n&uacute;mero absoluto de mosquitos foi maior logo ap&oacute;s os per&iacute;odos   nos quais ocorreu combina&ccedil;&atilde;o de temperaturas m&eacute;dias mais   altas, precipita&ccedil;&atilde;o de chuvas mais regular e, consequentemente,   umidade relativa mais elevada (<a href="#f4">Figuras 4</a>, <a href="#f5">5</a> e <a href="#f6">6</a>).</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> A correla&ccedil;&atilde;o entre a densidade     populacional dos flebotom&iacute;neos   e os fatores abi&oacute;ticos j&aacute; est&aacute; bem estabelecida, uma vez   que esses fatores interferem com o ciclo evolutivo dos flebotom&iacute;neos   e alteram seus s&iacute;tios reprodutivos. In&uacute;meros autores consideram   as precipita&ccedil;&otilde;es e a umidade relativa do ar fatores favor&aacute;veis   ao crescimento populacional desses vetores, devido ao desenvolvimento da vegeta&ccedil;&atilde;o   e incremento na quantidade de mat&eacute;ria org&acirc;nica e de locais favor&aacute;veis &agrave;  instala&ccedil;&atilde;o   de criadouros<sup>44,32,47</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Observou-se um decl&iacute;nio, tanto do n&uacute;mero total de flebotom&iacute;neos   capturados em 2002, como da diversidade de esp&eacute;cies, ap&oacute;s a aplica&ccedil;&atilde;o   domiciliar, em toda a &aacute;rea urbana, de inseticida piretr&oacute;ide,   a partir do m&ecirc;s de junho. Em 2003 e anos subsequentes, o n&uacute;mero   de vetores voltou a crescer, devido &agrave; irregularidade das borrifa&ccedil;&otilde;es,   que passaram a ocorrer apenas nas resid&ecirc;ncias com casos confirmados de   LVA humana ou canina, fato motivado pela escassez de inseticida. Outros fatores,   como condi&ccedil;&otilde;es clim&aacute;ticas e fisiogr&aacute;ficas desfavor&aacute;veis,   podem tamb&eacute;m ter contribu&iacute;do para a redu&ccedil;&atilde;o observada   nos meses mais frios e secos do ano.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> A densidade dos vetores e a infec&ccedil;&atilde;o     natural por <i>Leishmania </i>spp.,   o baixo n&iacute;vel socioecon&ocirc;mico da popula&ccedil;&atilde;o, com taxa   de pobreza igual a 32,88%<sup>22</sup>, a quantidade expressiva de moradias   pobres com m&aacute;s condi&ccedil;&otilde;es sanit&aacute;rias e coleta prec&aacute;ria   de lixo, a baixa densidade ou aus&ecirc;ncia de animais silvestres, o grande   n&uacute;mero de animais dom&eacute;sticos (principalmente, c&atilde;es e galinhas)   que acumulam detritos no ambiente peridom&eacute;stico e o enorme fluxo migrat&oacute;rio   causado pelo recente ciclo de industrializa&ccedil;&atilde;o   podem ser determinantes favor&aacute;veis para a instala&ccedil;&atilde;o   e transmiss&atilde;o da LVA na &aacute;rea estudada. Elas criam diferentes   nichos ecol&oacute;gicos prop&iacute;cios &agrave; prolifera&ccedil;&atilde;o   e concentra&ccedil;&atilde;o de flebotom&iacute;neos<sup>44,48</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Por outro lado, diferentes comportamentos antr&oacute;picos     no manejo do ambiente familiar, como a remo&ccedil;&atilde;o da vegeta&ccedil;&atilde;o     e de materiais org&acirc;nicos da &aacute;rea peridom&eacute;stica, podem     explicar a menor densidade vetorial em resid&ecirc;ncias onde a limpeza das     habita&ccedil;&otilde;es   e quintais &eacute; mais acurada. Nossas constata&ccedil;&otilde;es, verificadas <i>in     loco, </i>s&atilde;o concordantes com os estudos de Dujardin<sup>49</sup>,     Monteiro et al<sup>43</sup> e outros autores.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> O n&uacute;mero de humanos e c&atilde;es portadores de LVA nas localidades   pesquisadas foi estatisticamente associado &agrave; abund&acirc;ncia de <i>Lu.   longipalpis </i>(p &lt;  0,05).</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> O &iacute;ndice de positividade das f&ecirc;meas     de flebotom&iacute;neos   para formas promastigotas de <i>Leishmania </i>spp. foi igual a 1,18%; esse   valor, embora baixo, &eacute; concordante com estudos nacionais e internacionais   que encontraram taxas entre 1% e 2%<sup>42,15,50,5</sup>. Na natureza, a preval&ecirc;ncia   da infec&ccedil;&atilde;o por <i>Leishmania </i>na popula&ccedil;&atilde;o   global de flebotom&iacute;neos pode ser inferior a 0,1%, mesmo em &aacute;reas   end&ecirc;micas e de alta transmiss&atilde;o. No intuito de aumentar a efici&ecirc;ncia   da transmiss&atilde;o, o parasita manipula de modo adaptativo o comportamento   alimentar dos vetores, especialmente <i>Lu. longipalpis, </i>estimulando a   persist&ecirc;ncia dos insetos para picarem e se alimentarem em m&uacute;ltiplos   hospedeiros; mas isso ocorre somente se as leishmanias tiverem produzido formas   infectantes e um gel adesivo filamentoso de proteoglicanos na por&ccedil;&atilde;o   anterior do tubo digestivo dos fleb&oacute;tomos<sup>51</sup>.</font></p>     <p><font size="2" face="Verdana"> Os estudos da dispers&atilde;o espacial e temporal das popula&ccedil;&otilde;es   de vetores de leishmanioses no Munic&iacute;pio de Tr&ecirc;s Lagoas e seus   habitats preferenciais, indicando as &aacute;reas vulner&aacute;veis ou prop&iacute;cias &agrave; transmiss&atilde;o   da doen&ccedil;a, permitiram a obten&ccedil;&atilde;o de informa&ccedil;&otilde;es   que podem subsidiar a&ccedil;&otilde;es de preven&ccedil;&atilde;o e controle   no campo da sa&uacute;de p&uacute;blica. A posse desses dados possibilita &agrave; vigil&acirc;ncia   entomo-epidemiol&oacute;gica acompanhar de forma cont&iacute;nua o comportamento   dos vetores e o estado de sa&uacute;de da popula&ccedil;&atilde;o, de modo   que, dispondo das informa&ccedil;&otilde;es necess&aacute;rias, possa detectar   ou prever altera&ccedil;&otilde;es, direcionar e orientar de modo eficaz a   aplica&ccedil;&atilde;o de medidas preventivas contribuindo para a melhoria   das condi&ccedil;&otilde;es de sa&uacute;de da comunidade.</font></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     ]]></body>
