A soroprevalência da infecção varia de acordo com a região, sendo considerada alta no Brasil. No Estado do Pará, a maioria dos estudos está restrita à área urbana da Cidade de Belém, onde os índices são superiores a 70%. Os objetivos do presente estudo foram estimar a soroprevalência em uma área rural do Estado e identificar os fatores de risco associados à infecção. Estudo descritivo e transversal foi conduzido na população do Município de Novo Repartimento, sudeste do Pará. Foram incluídos no estudo 427 indivíduos randomicamente escolhidos na demanda do laboratório de análises clínicas do Município. As amostras de soro foram analisadas por reação de imunofluorescência indireta para detecção de IgG e IgM anti-T. gondii. De cada indivíduo, foram obtidas informações sociodemográficas e epidemiológicas para avaliar as variáveis em relação à soropositividade. A soroprevalência observada para IgG foi de 81,26% e 0,70% para IgM. As variáveis estatisticamente associadas com a infecção pelo T. gondii foram o contato com gatos fora do domicílio e o consumo de carne de animais silvestres (caça). Os dados obtidos demonstram a alta soroprevalência de toxoplasmose em uma área rural do Estado do Pará, onde características associadas com hábitos alimentares e comportamentais da população local favorecem o desenvolvimento e a transmissão do T. gondii.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii, a global protozoan that can infect birds and mammals, including humans. The seroprevalence of the infection varies according to the region, and is considered high in Brazil. In Pará State, most of the studies on T. gondii have been restricted to urban areas of the City of Belém, where infection rates are higher than 70%. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to estimate the seroprevalence in a rural area of the State and to identify the risk factors associated with this infection. A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in the population of the Municipality of Novo Repartimento, southeastern Pará. A total of 427 randomly selected individuals were included in the study from the clinical analysis laboratory of the Municipality. Serum samples were analyzed by indirect immunofluorescence test to detect IgG and IgM against T. gondii. Socio-demographic and epidemiological information was obtained from each individual to evaluate the variables in relation to the seropositivity. The seroprevalence observed for IgG was 81.26% and 0.70% for IgM. Variables statistically associated with T. gondiiinfection included contact with cats outside residence and consumption of bushmeat (hunting). The data demonstrate high prevalence of toxoplasmosis in a rural area of Pará, where characteristics associated with eating and behavioral habits of the local population favor the infection and transmission of T. gondii.]]></p></abstract>

La seroprevalencia de la infección varía de acuerdo a la región, siendo considerada elevada en Brasil. En el Estado de Pará, la mayoría de los estudios se restringe al área urbana de la Ciudad de Belém, en donde los índices son superiores al 70%. Los objetivos del presente estudio fueron de estimar la seroprevalencia en un área rural del estado e identificar los factores de riesgo asociados a la infección. Un estudio descriptivo y transversal se llevó a cabo en la población del Municipio de Novo Repartimento, sudeste de Pará. Se incluyeron en el estudio 427 individuos elegidos de modo aleatorio en la demanda del laboratorio de análisis clínicos del Municipio. Las muestras de suero se analizaron por reacción de inmunofluorescencia indirecta para la detección de IgG e IgM anti-T. gondii. De cada individuo se obtuvieron informaciones sociodemográficas y epidemiológicas, para evaluar las variables en relación a la seropositividad. La seroprevalencia observada para IgG fue de 81,26% y 0,70% para IgM. Las variables estadísticamente asociadas a la infección por T. gondii fueron el contacto con gatos fuera del domicilio y el consumo de carne de animales silvestres (caza).
