MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS:  Em ações de extensão universitária, realizadas de agosto de 2015 a julho de 2016, foram investigadas 524 pessoas, tanto na unidade universitária, como em logradouro público de Belém. Os casos identificados com anticorpos anti-HTLV-1/2 foram submetidos à pesquisa do DNA provírus por nested PCR e convidados a realizar avaliação clínico-ambulatorial e investigação na família.  RESULTADOS:  O anticorpo anti-HTLV-1/2 foi observado em 15,3% (80/524) dos investigados, correspondendo a 58,0% (58/100) dos casos referenciados à unidade, 20,5% (15/73) dos familiares de portadores do vírus e 2,1% (7/341) dos investigados em logradouro público. A infecção por HTLV-1 foi observada em 35,0% (35/100) dos casos referenciados, 13,7% (10/73) dos familiares e 1,5% (5/341) dos casos do logradouro público. A infecção por HTLV-2 foi confirmada em 11,0% (11/100) dos casos referenciados, 2,7% (2/73) dos familiares e 0,6% (2/341) do logradouro público. A frequência da infecção foi significativa entre mulheres (18,6%, p = 0,0146) e transfundidos (27,6%, p = 0,0021).  CONCLUSÃO:  A alta prevalência da infecção por HTLV, observada neste estudo, justifica a necessidade de programas e ações voltados para a investigação dos portadores desse vírus na região. Resultados de um estudo mais amplo podem subsidiar a elaboração de ações regionalizadas de manejo clínico e de reabilitação dos pacientes.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  OBJECTIVES:  To describe the results of the epidemiological investigation of human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) infection and to emphasize the importance of university extension actions in the prevention of this infection and associated diseases in Belém, Pará State, Brazil.  MATERIALS AND METHODS:  In university extension actions carried out from August 2015 to July 2016, 524 people were investigated in a university area and in a public space in Belém. Cases identified with anti-HTLV-1/2 antibodies were submitted to DNA provirus research by nested PCR and invited to perform clinical and laboratory evaluation and research with the patient&#8217;s family.  RESULTS:  Anti-HTLV-1/2 antibody was observed in 15.3% (80/524) of the investigated patients, corresponding to 58.0% (58/100) of the cases referred to the university area, 20.5% (15/73) of the relatives of virus carriers, and 2.1% (7/341) of those investigated in the public space.
